Portland officials are rolling out a novel strategy to curb gun violence: traffic barrels.
City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty has ordered the Portland Bureau of Transportation to install the traffic-calming devices across a six-block area in the Mt. Scott-Arleta neighborhood that has been plagued by shootings — some of which have been linked to high-speed drivers.
In a statement, Hardesty admitted there is "no simple solution" to the shooting spike recorded here and nationwide. Gun violence is going up even as other types of crime are decreasing. Hardesty said that officials must bring an "all-hands-on-deck" creative mindset to combat the problem.
"I'm directing PBOT to be more active and engaged in holistic solutions to community safety that can supplement police and other bureaus' roles in this effort," the transportation commissioner said on Oct. 1.

this idiot Hardesty should sit on one of these barrels at midnight and see how it keeps here safe.
This will only improve the shooters’ aim and reduce wasted ammo.
That family has had 2 incidents in the past few weeks; a car on fire down the block from their house, and another car with numerous bullet holes parked in front of their house. Apparently their street is one of the routes drivers can take to cut from Elston to Foster, and has become a popular route for people who don't live around there to make sudden high-speed trips to avoid somebody they don't want to be around.
Can't imagine what that is like, because when I grew up around there the street problems usually involved kids skitching a ride during the winter. I suppose it will spread and escalate, and I will be hearing about more stuff happening around there.
Just happy I moved to the suburbs when I finished college and only go back to visit. The husband refers to the mayor of Chicago as "Auntie Lori", as in "Auntie Lori will fix that problem soon."
If a person were convicted of a crime using a gun and minimum sentencing were 10 years on top of the crime, it would deter from using a gun in the commission of a crime.
Geeze. Why didn’t we think of this before? I’m sure we will see a huge reduction in high speed shooting but we might see a huge increase in traffic barrel homicides.
