While the number of Americans receiving some form of government assistance steadily expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people paying taxes fell to a modern low.
In 2020, 61% of all Americans — an estimated 107 million U.S. citizens — paid no taxes, according to a new report from the Tax Policy Center.

Same here. I am the 39%!
They got mine and I was “essential” doesn’t seem right that folks like me took the risk yet paid for Americans to sit sat home, even not pay rent while mine has gone up 20%.
And while Pennsylvania's tax is modest compared to most of our neighbors (3.6%), your locality taxes its 1% cut from dollar 1. Then there is a stupid occupancy tax for where you live, a per capita tax, a tax for where you work ($1 per week) and an assortment of other stupid annoying local taxes.
When our daughters went off to college, the local Chick-fil-A where they had worked in high school had an open invitation for them to work any holiday they returned. That lasted until a stupid "occupancy tax" passed that took the first $50 you earned. Not much incentive for a kid home from college for a short vacation to work.
I was unemployed during much of 2020 and I STILL paid income tax. LOTS of it.
How the hell can I NOT pay any taxes?
On the contrary, I now see a Cloward Piven scenario as our only hope. Fed.gov already looks much more like the Soviet Union than the opposite, and only grows larger, more intrusive and more "woke," and more statist with every dollar of Federal Reserve monetized debt.
Pray for its bankruptcy. Its the only way limited government, states rights and Federalism will be restored.
Although not explicitly stated, the didn't really mean 61% of the total population, as that would include children and retirees. Likely it references the total number of individual tax-returns filed, and what percentage of them had a Federal income-tax obligation for the year.
You.. can be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes! You can be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes! You say.. “Steve.. how can I be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes?” First.. get a million dollars. Now.. you say, “Steve.. what do I say to the tax man when he comes to my door and says, ‘You.. have never paid taxes’?” Two simple words. Two simple words in the English language: “I forgot!” How many times do we let ourselves get into terrible situations because we don’t say “I forgot”? Let’s say you’re on trial for armed robbery. You say to the judge, “I forgot armed robbery was illegal.” Let’s suppose he says back to you, “You have committed a foul crime. you have stolen hundreds and thousands of dollars from people at random, and you say, ‘I forgot’?” Two simple words: Excuuuuuse me!!“

I think the numbers reflect taxpayers who have filed. Remember, some who file pay no income tax, but get credits (money back).
Or your math which does not seem to account for the young who do not work.
You probably have a very self-selected group of friends and relatives. Go to one of the "low income" areas of your city, visit the local medicaid health-clinic for immigrants, or a local school, you will see vast swathes of dependent America - and CASH America. I know a family of Pakistanis who collect benefits AND run a totally cash family business.
You don’t understand the situation.
Well, if that’s true, then the rich need to pay their fair share...
You’re working with the whole population. Lots of people don’t earn income that can be taxed. Kids for instance. The 61% was based in working age citizens I’m sure.
I was so wrong to assume that my taxes would be less when I retired and was not earning income.
We shouldn’t have any income tax at all
There is something wrong with this statistic. Or in the labels assigned to it. In any case, for as little money as I made last year, I still paid taxes. I find it hard to believe that most people made less than I did, considering my income is well under half what it used to be, while I struggled with my business failure and several part-time jobs during Covid.
Hell I’m retired and pay income taxes, along with state tax, property taxes and sale taxes.
Yes, and illegals get paid under the table cash or other means, so they don’t pay taxes either, they’re just leeches up on the taxpayer
They are speaking of working age people...Of course, 2 and 3 year olds don’t pay taxes...LOL
61% of Americans who should not be voting.
