China has reacted furiously after Australia signed a new three-way security alliance with the US and the UK and vowed to build nuclear-power submarines.
China's Washington DC embassy spokesman Liu Pengyu accused the nations of adopting a 'Cold War mentality' towards China in reference to the stand-off between the US and the Soviet Union in the twentieth century.
Countries 'should not build exclusionary blocs targeting or harming the interests of third parties,' he said.
'In particular, they should shake off their Cold-War mentality and ideological prejudice.'
Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Thursday morning unveiled Australia's role in a landmark tripartite security group, known by the acronym 'AUKUS', which will see it switch to nuclear-powered submarines with help from its two of its biggest allies.

I am really surprised - and really happy - that the Morrison government is committing to nuclear submarines for Australia. I honestly never expected it to happen - it should have happened decades ago, but Australian governments have always been too concerned about the anti-nuclear lobby here.
To be frank, I didn't think Scott Morrison had the guts to do this.
I think Japan, Vietnam, and Taiwan are signing a mutual agreement as well.
I am thinking that with China acting the way it is, you will not get the chance.
As you said, this needed to start decades ago.
The world needs to be ready to deal with China.
Hopefully ready enough that China doesn’t push it.

Deals like this don’t happen overnight. Biden might be the President who signs it, I’m guessing he’s not the President who started it. I’ll credit him with not backing out, but that’s about it.

Hopefully the Royal Australian Navy has enough bailing wire and chewing gum to keep their Collins class subs running until they can build their nuclear attack subs.
