Colorado police on Friday explained how a heroic bystander who had just shot and killed a cop-hating gunman was himself fatally struck by a responding officer.
Johnny Hurley, 40, was shopping in downtown Arvada, a Denver suburb, when he heard Ronald Troyke ambush and murder Officer Gordon Beesley, who was responding to a call Monday afternoon, officials said.
Troyke, 59, then returned to his truck to grab an AR-15, and was holding it when Hurley — who was carrying a concealed weapon — confronted him and shot him dead, Police Chief Link Strate said in a video clip posted Friday. But when another officer responded to the scene, he saw Hurley holding the suspect’s rifle — and tragically mistook the good Samaritan for the cop killer, fatally shooting him, Strate said.

Well said. Same when I was a kid. We used to walk through downtown on our way out to go plinking or hunting. “You boys have a good hunt and be careful”. But that was a time when Law Enforcement actually presumed innocence before guilt. It is the exact opposite now, the right to kill without question because everyone is presumed guilty before they are innocent.
I’ve always said that wanting a badge and gun should be prima facie evidence that one should not be given one.
Thanks, you as well. I often think back to those times….remember gun racks in the back window of your pickup? Our high school parking lot was full of trucks with gun racks, and the gun racks generally held a .22 and a shotgun. Unless it was deer season, then those shotguns and .22’s were replaced with a deer rifle.
I often wonder how few school shootings we would have if every kid had a gun rack. If it had happened in our school, there would be no lockdown cause the kids would’ve been sprinting towards their trucks.

And that is why those things did not happen back then. And why it should still be this way. When you force everyone to become a victim. the door opens for those you will take advantage of that opportunity. As we know, it is the exact opposite of what they claim.

If the article is true, Hurley should have put the perp's weapon down immediately when he saw the responding officer. Step away from it with hands in the air.
Yep, you said, it deters crime, but I believe it also provides something that has been lost.
The sight of guns in the community should not be shocking. It is the main problem we face today. And we have gone so far now, that the sight of guns in public is not only shocking to everyday people, but shocking to the police themselves.
A society that values the right to keep AND BEAR arms simply cannot coexist with one that is afraid of bearing arms.
Well, certainly unlike Marines, I gather - we were trained to shoot only the folks we were supposed to shoot and we did fine, despite facing far greater danger than any cop will ever face. Conversely, this idiot cop shot a guy who undoubtedly saved that and several other cop's lives by killing a far better armed perp.
I've seen a lot of very overweight cops - and none of them tilted towards the right side of the Bell Curve. Seems to me that an athletic career, like police work, would require a high degree of physical fitness.
Police are supposed to be the guardians of the community, not "shoot first, ask questions later". You should be very thankful that none of them has found an excuse to shoot you, yet.

I heard this terrible report last night. I think most of us can agree it was unwise of the civilian hero to pick up the rifle. Was he perhaps concerned there was an accomplice? We’ll never know.
Thinking of myself in that position, perhaps putting my foot on the rifle and my hands clearly in the air until the police arrived....it’s the only thing I can think of that might be prudent in a situation such as this. And of course, pray a lot. What do you think? Thanks in advance

No, no, no! I wasn’t suggesting that at all, but you are correct.
Someone here on FR posted stats to the likelihood of getting shot and the which is likely to involve death. The ongoing issue has always been how missing or incomplete the data was to determine the likelihood of both getting shot and the likelihood of dying from it. The anti-Constitutionalists do not want the truth to be known.

As the old saying really goes “never bring a pistol to a rifle fight”. This gentleman was lucky enough to win in that fight. Once you do, you have to go to the rifle, because there may be more bad guys, and you are clearly in a rifle fight.
I believe this hero did nothing wrong. The mere sight of the rifle is not justification for the outcome we have here.
Essentially, what we have here is a tragedy, but we must not forget that this was a hero killed by an agent of the state. We must change our views on arms in the public domain, or the 2A is doomed.
Absolutely, I am in Az and it is “Normal” here. No one bats an eye at open carry because it is so common and everyday.
And that is exactly right, once it is allowed the “shock factor” wears off in no time. As it is their Psyops has people shaking in their boots at even just a picture of a firearm. They have them convinced that picture of a firearm can actually kill them.

Thank you... I was going to make that point too. Even the military rules of engagement during conflict are more sane and logical than the current rules of engagement being practiced against CITIZENS by law enforcement.
Pretty bad when your chances of being left alive and just taken prisoner during WAR is now better as an enemy combatant than a Citizen of the U.S. There is something very very wrong with this comparison picture for sure.
