ALLEN PARK -- Almost all COVID-era restrictions have been dropped for vaccinated players next season. That means no daily testing, no masks, no contact tracing. Life will be almost normal for players who are fully vaxxed.
Unvaccinated players, not so much.
The NFL and NFLPA announced on Wednesday players who decline to get the vaccine will continue to face many of the same COVID restrictions through at least the preseason, at which point the policy will be re-evaluated. That means players such as Detroit’s Taylor Decker -- who has said he won’t get the vaccine -- will have to continue testing daily for the virus. And that’s only the start.
Unvaccinated players will have to continue wearing masks at team facilities and on road trips. They will face new restrictions on those road trips too, including having to fly separately from the team charter. They can’t see anyone -- including friends and family -- who is not in the team’s official traveling party. They can’t go to restaurants. They can’t use hotel spas, gyms or pools either.
Unvaccinated players must remain physically distant from others at team facilities, can’t use the spas or saunas and can’t use the cafeteria. They also can’t use the weight room with more than 15 people. They can’t pursue social media, marketing or sponsorship opportunities. And, most consequentially of all, they won’t be eligible to play if they contract the virus or come into close contact with an infected person. They would still face a mandatory five-day quarantine if contact tracing reveals a close contact.
Vaccinated players, meantime, will be eligible to play even if they have a high-risk contact with an infected person. They would be ineligible to play if they do test for the virus, but they only have to test once every two weeks.
The vaccine continues to be optional for players, but the difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated has never been more stark and those who choose not to get inoculated -- such as Detroit’s starting left tackle -- will be at a disadvantage in almost every way.
“I did not get vaccinated and I’m not going to,” Decker said in April. “I’m just not going to speak to the reasons why. I have my reasons. I don’t know, it’s just such a hot-button topic, but, me personally, I just don’t feel like it’s the best thing for me. So I’m not going to do it.”
Who has rule over charter flights
Can’t get into any college without a vaccine now. Not that I’d want my kids to go to ANY college.
Regular public can fly so long as they wear a mask or show proof of being vaccinated.
This is unacceptable.
Apparently slavery has not been abolished—the masters have ordered the slaves to become medical experimentation subjects.
You can in Arizona.
I told my 12 ear old daughter she might not be able to go back to school in the fall if she isn’t vaccinated.
My daughter: “Sweet!”
Huh???
Just punitive.
“They can’t pursue social media, marketing or sponsorship opportunities.”
No because of this story, just thought I'd make note of it.
If they are vaccinated why are they worried about someone who is not. Think of it as a flu shot. Not everyone is vaccinated but, if you are don’t worry about me.
Never mind having had the virus is far better than vaccines, for those who supposedly had it. And many are getting CV-19 even with the vaccines - or did they get CV-19 from the vax.
They can sweat and spit on each other, draw and smear blood from contact, use the latrines, locker rooms, etc.
But those planes... That is a bridge too far...

By the way, viruses can and do get contracted through the eyes, which we never protected.
This entire thing is so stupid.
This won’t happen. The league is 80% black and 75% of blacks aren’t vaxxed.
I wonder if Tom Brady is taking the vaccine…
You and I both know this has never been about a virus
Simply control.
I am no lawyer, but that doesn't sound quite legal to me. I admit I don't know what NFL contracts state but sounds like interference in prospective business relations. Players need income after they can't play anymore. To deny them social presence and business opportunities when they are visible is economically punitive to them after they can't play anymore. And all of it, more than a bit coercive or draconian.
