White House chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci late Friday pushed back on fresh criticism from Republicans following the release of thousands of his emails this week, calling the backlash "inappropriate" and "misleading."
"It's really very much an attack on science," Fauci said during an interview on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show" when asked about the latest attacks targeting him.
"I mean, it is what it is. I'm a public figure, I'm going to take the arrows and the slings, but they're just — they're fabricated, and that's just what it is," added Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
"My job was to make a vaccine and use my institute and these talented scientists that we have there and that we fund in the various universities to get a vaccine that was highly safe and highly effective," he continued.
"We succeeded," he said. "All the other stuff is just a terrible, not happy type of distraction. But it's all nonsense."

Fauci is drowning in the truth of his own emails. He has only two choices. He can resign or keep issuing a blanket denial and depend on his reputation (LOL) saving him. He is doing the latter until he has to resign, probably next week.
The article is also full of lies. The biggest one being that Fauci never directly discounted the lab leak. Perhaps not, but he did everything he could to organize a propaganda campaign to that affect.
Inappropriate and misleading... Sounds just like his covid recommendations.

Fauci has been a strong proponent of GOF for many years before 2017. Personally, I think that Fauci’s ego is driving him to join the top tier of famous disease fighters (Pasteur, Jenner, Walter Reed, Salk etc) with breakthrough MRNA vaccines that can be synthetically mass-produced for vaccines very rapidly after new disease outbreaks.
But instead of waiting for natural zoonotic outbreaks, the big proponents of the synthetic MRNA vaccines wanted to play with new man-made viruses, in order to more rapidly develop the vaccines, so they used GOF to create new viruses to accelerate the development research process. IOW, he wanted credit for the next great medical breakthrough “on his watch,” before he retires/dies.
This is, I believe, what explains this 2012 Fauci quote:

The people who set Fauci up (Please, DON'T infer any sympathy for him here because there is none) aren't students of scripture but they do understand human nature. Fauci is due for his fall now, and the biggest villains and killers will have left him holding the syringe, for now.

To clarify, Fauci cannot directly deny these treatments, but his (and CDC’s) “guidelines” carry a lot of weight.
The biggest threats to a medical practice are malpractice lawsuits and medical board censures.
A doctor may prescribe HCQ and/or other prophylaxis treatments for COVID, but they would be operating outside of these guidelines, and therefore putting their practice at risk. Very few doctors are willing to take that risk.
