Ga. PD launches 'Shoot to Incapacitate' program
Atlanta Journal-Constitution (through Police 1) ^ | 5/7/2021 | Brad Schrade

Posted on 05/09/2021 5:36:06 AM PDT by No.6

(excerpt) The training is part of a new program launched by the West Georgia agency meant to address some of these questions. The program, called "Shoot to Incapacitate," is challenging decades of police orthodoxy around use of deadly force. Instead of teaching officers to always aim for available center mass of the body — usually the chest, upper torso and head — the training is giving them another option if they must fire their weapons in the line of duty.

The course is the first of its kind in Georgia and could well be a first in the nation. It is teaching officers that in some instances where they are authorized to use deadly force, they have the option to aim for the pelvic region, abdomen, legs and arms of a person posing a threat. The idea is that a gunshot to these areas, while still potentially deadly, could stop the threat while increasing the chance that the wounds will not be fatal.

“Could” stop. But also may not. So rather than go for the highest chance of success, in a LIFE OR DEATH SITUATION (by definition) you want them to further risk their lives, and the lives of innocent bystanders. Great plan {slow clap}

You shoot until the threat is no longer there. No disagreement between us. I was simply noting the statistic. I do question why 6 rounds from a revolver now requires/equates to emptying a magazine from a Glock. The answers could be legit. But training hammer drills vs double tap for response is a valid question.

I scanned all the comments on this thread so far. And everyone has missed one obvious point. Cops have had a shoot to incapacitate policy for years. For decades. It’s called tasers.

I firmly believe tasers should be immediately removed from our police departments across the country. If an individual resist arrest, shoot them. Center mass.

Tasers are why so many BLM thugs feel they can ignore police orders to stop. Tasers are the reason why crimes are on the increase.

Hasn’t it been used in court that if you admit you ‘shot to incapacitate’ you must not really have been in immanent life threatening danger? I could swear there have been cases like that were a guy shot to incapacitate and ended up in more trouble.

Note that, for both revolvers and semi autos, the number of shots fired typically was “all the rounds on the gun”.

It could very well be that 5 or 6 rounds were enough to stop the threat. And it could be that more cops were shot after they had emptied their revolver and before they could reload.

I think the answer may be adrenaline.

You're in a life or death situation.

I'd also ask for those who have been in actual combat how effective is their shooting.

Your suggestion is at one extreme, and not recommended.

I apologize to you both; I should have included a sarcasm tag.

I was attempting to point out the absurdity of the "shoot to incapacitate" concept.

I also forgot that some Liberals (not you, of course!) would undoubtedly embrace my suggestion - which is strongly reminiscent of Barney Fife's "I'm warning you! I am now taking my one bullet out of my breast pocket, and putting it into my revolver!"

Regards,

Every Barnaby Jones (A Quinn Martin Production) episode had Barnaby shoot the gun out of his foes hand. Maybe he should teach the police how to do that.

It looks like hitting the perp in the ***** is worth as many points as shooting the gun out of his hand, or hitting him in the kneecap.

(I think this is an extremely bad idea, and wonder if whoever thought it up has ever fired a gun in a real world situation. If I worked for this PD, I'd be sending out resumes.)

The Lawyer Employment Act.

“Why didn’t you shoot to incapacitate?”

Cha-ching!

No need to apologize, while I did think you question was real, I didn't think you were advocating the nonsense in the article. The thing is that it's not that they would embrace the suggestion, it's that they do. I've had the conversation with more than one non-gun owner.

I believe Lee Harvey Oswald would agree, if he’d survived.

Good point. You shoot for the center of mass and hope you can hit something.

Better yet, just mimic Lash LaRue, snap the weapon out of the hand with his bullwhip....

Also could be used to discourage smokers....

I will nominate number four as the officer to be exonerated of criminal charges, but to be sued individually in a civil action that leaves him bankrupt.
