House set to vote for slavery reparations commission

A House committee this week will take an unprecedented vote to create a commission to study providing federal reparations to the descendants of black slaves.

House Democrats say they have the political momentum to advance H.R. 40, an act to create a commission to study and develop reparation proposals for black people.

"The historic markup of H.R. 40 is intended to continue a national conversation about how to confront the brutal mistreatment of African Americans during chattel slavery, Jim Crow segregation, and the enduring structural racism that remains endemic to our society today," Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat, said.

The Judiciary Committee, run by Democrats, is expected to advance the legislation to the House floor in a vote on Wednesday.

While the reparations bill was first introduced more than three decades ago by the late Rep. John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat, the measure gained traction in the last two years after Democrats regained control of Congress and a new racial justice movement spread across the nation.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democrat from Texas, told CBS News last week, “The timing is great.”

Democrats believe they can leverage recent civil unrest related to police misconduct as well as opposition to new red-state voter laws and anger over wealth disparities to help push the bill into law.

"We are now, unfortunately, seemingly going back — massive voter oppression and suppression with legislation across America, the tragedies against black men as it relates to the encounters in law enforcement certainly needs to be repaired, and the disparities in wealth is very stark, even today,” Jackson Lee said. “The time for H.R. 40 is now."

House Democratic leaders have not indicated when or if they’ll bring up the measure,

Probably every (non-recent immigrant) black American is a descendant of slave owners. Henry “Skippy” Gates said he has never seen an African-American who did not have some European ancestry.

I can’t see how it’s fair that blacks are on a committee that they will personally benefit from. Of course silence from the media and GOP.

Since they are including "systemic racism" among the criteria, any black person will qualify for money, even if he or she is a millionaire from Nigeria who immigrated a couple of years ago.

Systemic racism is like phlogiston--it doesn't have to be proven. It is just taken as fact.

They have stopped publishing the inconvenient fact that 80% of the public is against this. If they pass this it will bode poorly for their reelection chances. I can only figure that the purpose will be to pay for a whole lot of very slanted research in order to further marinate the voters in endless grievance with the goal of wearing them down. Probably there would be a window of relative peace while arguments are being formulated, and while the 2022 elections are taking place.

Time will tell. I even saw an article suggesting that the GOP would support reparations in order to save the country.

There is a reason why statute of limitations exist, and why generational debt does not.

>> or is the test the color of one’s skin?

Bingo

They already let it slip that it was to make restitution for slavery AND racism/discrimination.

I’ve already asked if Irish and Jews get restitution for racism and discrimination.

(1) This isn't going anywhere; it's a bone thrown to BLM because Biden & the DNC still hasn't met with their leadership. They're focused on bringing in the illegals to replace them.

(2) If it does somehow, miraculously pass, less than 1% of the money will actually go to the vast majority of blacks. The rest will line the pockets of various community organizers, corrupt city council people, and the usual suspects in the "civil rights" movement.

Already, BLM is eating its own because their leader is profiting off the group's name and bought several houses.

Great news! My family's identified as descendants from slaves since 1619. Those of us surviving today should be in store for millions!

“descendants of black slaves.”

How in the world would that be determined?

By producing ID, of course, at least according to Oregon Senate Bill 619 (https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2021R1/Measures/Overview/SB619) which says:

A BILL FOR AN ACT Relating to reparations for slavery. Be It Enacted by the People of the State of Oregon: SECTION 1.
  1. The Department of Revenue shall establish a program to pay reparations to Black Oregonians who can demonstrate heritage in slavery and who submit an application to the department no later than December 31, 2022.
  2. A person is eligible for reparations under this section if the person demonstrates that the person:
    1. Is descended from an American slave;
    2. Has identified as African-American on legal documents for at least 10 years before the date of the application;
    3. Is at least 18 years of age, an emancipated minor or a ward, as defined in ORS 419A.004, whose parents are deceased or for whom parental rights have been terminated and have not been reinstated; and
    4. Has resided in Oregon for at least two years before the date of the application.
  3. The department shall pay to each eligible applicant the amount of $123,000 in the form of an annuity payable annually for the life of the applicant.
  4. Reparations paid under this section and the right of a person to an annuity under this section are exempt from garnishment and all state, county and municipal taxation, except as provided under ORS chapter 118, are not subject to execution, garnishment, attachment or any other process or to the operation of any bankruptcy or insolvency law and are unassignable.
  5. The department may adopt rules to implement this section
So goes Oregon, so goes the country?

My great, great, great grandfather for whom I was named (real name) fought as a volunteer. He didn’t die in it but many of his fellow soldiers did. That absurd waste of life for nothing should be paid back.

Hi.

The Irish, who were “indentured servants,” get squat.

Oh, wait a minute. I’m Irish and my wife is African American. Hmmm.

I think you’re on to something.

1) they say community centers, afterschool basketball programs ,scholarships, money to help in housing and job skills is “reparations.”

or

2) After black people go crazy over that dodge, real money to them starts flowing. Gimme my government money or else.

Then non persons of color go crazy.
I expect the last one. And that’s why DC is still under military rule behind barricades. Not really about Pelosi’s chair being protected.

You presented important and useful information for this argument.

So after Americans said “Gosh if only we could turn into California” now they’ll say they want to live like they do in Portland, Oregon. /s

Old Jim Rohn joke was America is the great place others want to be. “You don’t hear people say if only I could sneak across the border at night and get into Poland.” After reparations and inflation and the coming war, Poland or even Ukraine sound a little bit better.
