How are you dealing with the turmoil and uncertainty of these days? For some, this is a theological question. Some see the clear imprint of the End Times in our current events. Maybe so. We should always be ready to walk outside and see Jesus coming on the clouds of heaven. Today may well be the Day.

History, however, gives me pause. Eighty-two years ago, world war broke out in Europe. If Hitler did not look like the anti-Christ back then, I’m not sure who would. The war’s end revealed 50 million dead, with extraordinary and widespread suffering for the survivors. But rather than Christ coming in the clouds, the rebuilding and prosperity following the war set the stage for world-wide evangelization on a scale never before seen.

This leads us to an important biblical principle we should consider. We cannot fully comprehend God’s purposes, if we focus only on what we see in the near term. We must also carefully consider what God is doing in the long run.

Misplaced Expectations

We see this powerfully demonstrated at Christ’s first appearing. The prophets foretold His coming nearly 800 years before His nativity. Many of these Messianic prophecies were misunderstood. There was a widespread rabbinic belief that the prophetic references to the Son actually referred to the nation of Israel. And to those who recognized Messiah as a man, He was understood to be a military or political leader who would lead Israel out of bondage.

Hence the men walking on the road to Emmaus after the crucifixion, who said to the risen but unrecognized Christ: “We had hoped he was the one to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:21). Which of course He was, but not in the way they imagined. And even on the Mount of Olives immediately prior to His ascension, His disciples confusedly asked Him: “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” (Acts 1:6). They were led astray by focusing on their short-term expectations and understanding.

By contrast, the entire redemptive history preceding Christ’s passion was aimed at that event. Even back to the Garden of Eden, where God pronounced the “proto-evangelium” (the first Gospel) embedded within His curse upon the serpent:

“Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel” (Genesis 3:14-15; emphasis added).

Hinge-Point of History

With this longer view, we understand Christ’s suffering, resurrection, and ascension are the hinge-point of human history. A hinge in the sense that everything preceding it pointed to the fulfillment of the Redemptive Covenant made between God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit—before time began. And human history following Christ’s passion is unalterably shaped by it.

Jesus’s perfect obedience to His Father effected the redemption of those who are His. And not only their redemption, when we consider what’s called double imputation. Our sins were imputed to Christ who paid for them all with His own body and blood. And Christ’s righteousness is imputed to us who believe and trust Him as Savior and Lord.

After Christ’s crucifixion and burial, the disciples were dejected and fearful. The near-term prospects they faced were daunting. But Christ came for an eternal purpose—to inaugurate the Kingdom of God here on Earth and to call into it those who are His. He promised to build His church, saying even the gates of hell cannot prevail against it. And even now Christ is ruling and reigning in the heavenlies with all the saints who have gone before us.

Yes, we live in uncertain even troubling times. The Christian consensus prevailing since the American founding seems to have evaporated like the dew before the rising sun. Yet the King is seated on His throne. We trust in Him who loved us and loosed us from our sins in His own precious blood. Never will He leave us or forsake us—even to the end of the age.

We do not know when our Lord will call us out and unto Himself is true.
My mother said every generation has thought the end was near for one reason or another. The truth be told, we who are in Christ Jesus have that hope within us. Every generation has had it I believe.
This generation has one reason for our hope to be increased and that is Israel is back in the land. Seventy years there and the promise of that generation living to see the end of gentile times. While it looks like we are near no one can be sure. Just keep looking up and pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

The Christian consensus prevailing since the American founding seems to have evaporated like the dew before the rising sun.

During the time of the Revolutionary War, there were Americans loyal to the Crown, there were neutrals and there were anti-Crown terrorists (sarc). Within the original 13 colonies the general consensus is that about 20% (~400,000) of the white population (~ 2 million) remained loyal to the British crown. About 45% considered themselves patriots dedicated to the revolution and about 35% were "fence sitters" that just wanted to keep a low profile and not be involved. Man

Then we have the Civil War - again we had a divided nation and great bloodshed.

Division is nothing new to our nation! Our Constitution was designed to accomodate division without bloodshed. Unfortunately, nations including our own, have experienced war as a 'continuation of politics by other means.'

Let's pray that our nation will come back to its founding principals without bloodshed!

Why?

Blood shed might very well be necessary to overthrow the tyrants that have conquered America

To fear bloodshed is to admit defeat and the loss of America

If Hitler did not look like the anti-Christ back then, I’m not sure who would.

No. Hitler did not look like the anti-christ.

Our first description of anti-christ comes from Jesus Christ himself. In the good news from the Apostle John, in Chapter 5, v. 43, Jesus speaking to the Jews in the Temple said: I who come in the name of the Father you will reject; another who comes in his own name, him you will receive."

In what capacity did Jesus come to be rejected? Messiah. In order to make that claim, the "another" who comes in his own name, needs to be a Jew to have his claim accepted.

The translation in Daniel 9:26 of the word presented as "people" is also a little misleading. The underlying word means "tribal or ethnic group"; the prophecy is of destruction of the temple by Titus' army in 70 AD referencing them as ancestor's of the coming prince who we generally understand to be Anti-Christ.

All of the historical authors are unanimous about the makeup of the army which destroyed the Temple: Tacitus is a good example ("levies on the local kings"); Josephus names names and tells you where the individuals came from--in every single example, the solders who destroyed the Temple were ethnic Assyrians generally from Modern Turkey and Syria.

Anti-Christ is a Jew who comes from the ethnic Assyrians. If the speculation that he will come from the tribe of Dan is correct, he might be expected to come from the general area where that tribe was relocated South of modern Damascus.

Look for him coming soon.

Why?...Do I need to explain why a bloodless revolution is preferable to a bloody one?

Blood shed might very well be necessary to overthrow the tyrants that have conquered America ...I agree.

To fear bloodshed is to admit defeat and the loss of America. ...I agree.

I'm not very well-versed, Biblically, so I have to ask: Didn't He then clear up their confusion? Sit them down and explain, in loving detail, that the "Kingdom of God" and "coming in glory and power" were all meant to be understood only allegorically? And that the drudgery of day-to-day life would remain unchanged for millennia?

How, at that point in time (years after His ministry had begun) could His closest followers NOT have understood what He certainly would have taken pains to explain to them in plain words?

I mean, NONE of His words could possibly have been misunderstood to imply that this "coming again in glory and power" was going to happen during their lifetime, could they? Surely He made it clear that thousands of years of misery for the "common man," persecution, etc. were still in the offing, right?

Regards,
