Bill in the Oregon Legislature would ban diesel fuel sales by end of decade

(The Center Square) – A bill in the Oregon Legislature this session would ban the sale of diesel fuel by the end of this decade, but not if Republican lawmakers can help it.

Introduced by state Rep. Karen Power, D-Milwaukie, House Bill 3305 would see the state enact a phased ban on diesel fuel over the next eight years starting with non-retail fuel dealers in Oregon's most populous counties.

The ban would hit non-retail dealers in Clackamas, Washington, and Multnomah Counties in 2024, then all non-retail dealers statewide in 2027, before applying to all retail dealers in 2028.

HB 3305 builds on legislation passed by state lawmakers in 2019 requiring big rig truck owners to upgrade their rides with diesel engines from 2010 or newer by 2025. Under the law, those upgrades would be paid for with $50 million in state money won from Oregon's 2017 settlement with automaker Volkswagen over its diesel emissions scandal.

Diesel emissions make up a big part of Gov. Kate Brown's 2020 executive order directing state agencies to regulate greenhouse gas emissions with the goal of cutting state carbon emissions to at least 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.

Such efforts are akin to those in Washington where state lawmakers are want to adopt a clean fuels program much in line with Oregon's as they decide how to pay for another decade of overdue road maintenance.

Power's bill stirred strong feelings among her Republican colleagues who accused it of threatening working class Oregonians.

No way for diesel-powered ships or big rigs to refuel while in OR? I suspect that’s going to put a damper on things if not cause prices to skyrocket. GG Oregon.

That will not fly with the ag industry, the loggers, or the folks who keep our nation stocked up via trucks and trains.

Someone has lost their minds.

The sulfur from diesel is good plants. Any farmer can tell you that.

...Republicans accused it of threatening working class Oregonians

The Dems have dropped their masks completely now and exposed themselves as strongly against the working man middle class. Such a proposal will only win in state capitols and big cities. Wait until the elites in those places suddenly discover everything they purchase was delivered in a diesel-powered truck.

Well I guess that they will have to return to steam locomotives for the trains and horse and wagons to replace large trucks. When are these people going to start to live in the real world?

Sounds like an Interstate Commerce issue, if ever there were one.

Ask Oregon’s significant logging industry what they think of that.

Not a problem...assuming they figure out how to distribute all of the goods that are transported by diesel engines to local stores.

And I’ll bet no one thought about the TRUCKERS that deliver pretty much EVERYTHING to EVERYONE, every day.

And ALL powered by diesel.

What...do they think semis are going to be electric? Ahahahahaha.......

They are flat, freaking insane.

Probably not allowed under Interstate Commerce rules. Will be tied up in the courts for years.

My gawd those people are mind sick. So no essential goods deliveries in Oregon any more. Get the horses and buggies ready for any trip to Oregon.

Guess these extremists will be breaking out the old wagon trains of the 1800's to get food delivered to the stores. Whoops, nope, the wagons are pulled by animals that will crap everywhere and pollute the greenies valhalla. Well maybe balloons? Nope, they use propane burners so they're out. They can hire the illegals that bring the bales of dope to the Oregon man-bun population to bring bales of food.

No diesel - guess they will find out how quickly their grocery stores will become empty, how quickly they will run out of gasoline, how quickly essential other items will dry up. And heaven forbid a power loss requiring diesel generators.
