10th Walgreens to close since 2019 in San Francisco
SF Gate ^ | March 3, 2021 | by Tessa McLean

Yet another Walgreens will shut its doors permanently this month.

The store at the corner of Bush and Larkin streets posted signs in its windows last week announcing the closure, which will happen March 17.

But community members are so concerned about the closure, they’ve started an online petition hoping to stop it. The Change.org petition had 179 signatures as of publication and emphasizes the importance of the location to senior residents.

Walgreens locations in San Francisco have often been a target of rampant shoplifting, with a recent incident even caught on camera during an "Inside Edition" segment. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that one Walgreens location lost on average about $1,000 a day in merchandise because of shoplifting. Theft of less than $950 in goods is treated as a nonviolent misdemeanor under California law.

In a communist utopia, stores would be open and would distribute all goods completely free of charge.

California is almost there, but there are still some wrinkles.

There’s a mathematical formula here....as you decreased these shops...it simply means fewer places to rob, and for the remaining shops...their rate of incidence increases.

Residents of this neighborhood will begin to wonder why they have no store nearby... and probably won’t figure it out.

How poetically just would it be if Democrats ram through universal healthcare, but the last drugstore closes and leaves CA? All that free medicine but nowhere to get it.

For those that don’t know California has a law that says a theft of under $900 is a misdemeanor and the suspect if caught is “arrested” and given a citation to appear and released.

If they don’t appear a warrant is issued for their arrest.

If they are then caught and it is determined they have an outstanding warrant they are arrested and given another citation to appear and then released.

...and the cycle continues.

So people can and do simply walk into stores and walk out without paying for what they took and if by some chance caught the worse is the property is returned to the owner otherwise no consequences.

In California you will always find a “homeless” camp near one of the big box stores.

It is not a wonder that Walgreen is closing a store, it is a wonder why any retail business is open in California.

Does Walgreens prosecute shoplifters in the other 49?

Really want to end this ****?

Repeal tax deductibility for shrinkage losses.

Then retailers will take a much harder stand on shoplifting and insist pols do, too.

Last year, my SIL went into a SF Walgreens to purchase aspirin. On inquiring why the shelves were bare, he was told that the shoplifters come in with calculators, take up to $950 in merchandise, and calmly walk out. Often, a fence is waiting outside to buy the stolen goods for pennies on a dollar from the perps, who promptly walk back into the store with calculator in hand, to do some more “shopping.”

San Francisco is,today, populated largely by (but certainly not *entirely* by) the filthiest creatures who walk upright.

I,personally, would cheer wildly if,after the good people of Kalifornia were given adequate warning, the state were to slide into the sea...taking those filthy, filthy people to their watery graves!

Isn't that because the Soros puppet who's DA in San Francisco has declared that robberies under $1,000 wouldn't be prosecuted?

“Then retailers will take a much harder stand on shoplifting and insist pols do, too.”

My understanding is that the authorities will not respond to calls for shoplifting offenses. Did they steal something worth more than $900? Well, then, don’t bother us. As to insisting the politicians take action, a store owner probably does not vote as no one on the company board lives there. I have the same problem as a landlord. I have one vote and none of my renters vote. So, every increase in taxes falls on rental units rather than on home owners. My taxes have doubled in less than ten years while home taxes on individually owned houses have gone up relatively little.

The store owners are voting by closing their stores, which is the only influence they have on the politicians and that is remote at best.

Incidentally, the business model of CVS and Walgreens isn’t to sell items other than drugs. Their model is to buy corner lots in areas where the value of those lots will continue to rise. The bulk of their company value is not sales, but the value of the land their stores are on. The real money flow is from drug sales. But due to the law, if they also sell items not related to drugs they get a huge tax break. Thus you can buy hugely overpriced lawn chairs and pool toys. The sale of items unrelated to drugs is almost zero for most stores. Those items are there only for the tax break having them allows. Thus, drug sales are the main feature of the business. But if losses outrun drug sale profits, the location must close. Nobody runs a business for charity. Even charities must make a profit or they close.

There’s a reason Oracle World is no longer hosted in SF. Four city blocks of downtown SF full of rich nerds moved to Las Vegas.

They don’t respond now because retailers aren’t breathing fire, aren’t prosecuting, are just passing the costs along.

Repeal tax deductibility for shrinkage losses and watch retailers suddenly get religion.

The other thing to keep in mind is, that with minimum wages rising, online is looking far more attractive to merchants.

Guess it just depends on how badly folks want to keep neighborhood retailers.

When you don’t, and tax deductibility for shrinkage, no cops, high taxes and labor costs are signs that you don’t, what you’re left with is online or going farther away for what you want if you want/ need it ASAP.
