Nevada governor proposes giving tech firms power to govern

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada's governor on Friday unveiled a proposal that would allow technology companies to establish jurisdictions with powers similar to those of county governments, arguing the state needed to be bold to diversify its economy and pushing back against those who have likened the idea to company towns.

“This proposal is an exciting, unprecedented concept that has a potential to position Nevada as a global center of advanced technology and innovation, while helping to create immediate positive economic impact and shape the economy of the future,” Gov. Steve Sisolak said of his Innovation Zones idea. “As we’ve learned in the past, an emergency requires us to throw out the tried-and-true, discard the ‘How We’ve Always Done It’ manual and move on.”

Under the proposal, companies developing cutting-edge technologies that have at least 50,000 acres (200 sq. kilometers) of land and promise to invest $1.25 billion could establish “Innovation Zones." The zones would be governed by a board responsible for overseeing zoning, taxation, law enforcement and other government functions on their land. It would override local county regulations.

Why only the county level? Let Google run all levels of government. Who needs this democracy drivel anyway?

"...governed by a board ..."

I am familiar with such boards. What happened here in VIrginia was those boards got away with fiscal murder, arbitrarily fining and taxing residents and dividing the spoils amongst themselves. Then after an outcry about 15 years ago VIrginia passed laws to reign in those boards. Now their power is greatly reduced although still too much in a few cases.

While at first glance this doesn’t sound like a good thing and it may not be, the governor has a solid point.

Waiting for the economy to recover organically isn’t working. For areas, like Nevada, that depend on tourism this slow paced recovery is a failure. Travel is predicted to be down 40% or more again this year. That figure is not going to get better anytime soon. So the tourism/travel industry needs to pivot.

After every big downturn in the economy we bounce back with some sort of new technology. The governor is willing to risk essentially a portion of his state on this innovation zone.

The proposed zone is for Blockchain. Essentially the new banking/old banking system that handles transactions. Ceding over governance isn’t wise though. It sets Blockchain up for their own little thiefdom. And yes, I said thiefdom exempt from county/state reach? That’s a bad idea on the face of things.

Wouldn’t this enable a lot more censorship and uneven treatment than we are presently seeing?

Florida didn’t have that problem. Nevada should do with Florida’s doing. A simpler and better solution than what is being proposed here.

Considering the behavior of the likes of Zuckerberg I find the idea of giving these people their own mini-state absolutely horrible and frightening. Although the dark side of me says let there be a trial or two to show how this would descend into some Techno Dystopia.

Does Netflix count? The Obamas are on the board there.

Say 20 years ago I would have supported this notion. After observing the absolute abuse of power by out Tech Overlords I changed my mind.

This is Neo-Feudalism. I have long argued that this is the direction, not Communism, is where the “Elites” want to take the World.

Again, Nevada's problems are not "organic". They are artificial, created by the economy killing policies put forward by the Socialist/Globalists, backed by the very techno-fascist oligarchs the governor would hand even more control over to.

****Waiting for the economy to recover organically isn’t working****

Reiterating what Code Tode said, Covid was the excuse to kill it. You will not get any help until you stop believing the lie and help yourself. Expand that to your neighbors and you will have strength.
