He didn't say that. He would have said,

“Recently, Bob Dole was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Bob Dole's treatment will begin on Monday,” Dole, 97, said in a statement.

At 97, he might not make it through the treatment.

Wow... dude is still alive?

I’m not sure I’d even bother with treatment at that age as I think it’d be worse than the cancer.

Bob Dole is going to vote for Bob Dole. :)

Norm MacDonald had a great impersonation of him.

Not to sound mean but I am surprised he is still alive. He has had a heck of a life.

Wow, 97. Most folks who get this at that age it’s from Asbestos

Stage 4 is a death sentence. At 97, they should make him as comfortable as possible. If he personally wants the treatment, he should get it...but still a death sentence.

I remember when he fell of the stage at a rally during the 96 race for President. I knew at that instant that he was toast.

Especially with how badly he was injured in the war. I never cared for him as a politician, but I always admired his resilience in dealing with his wounds.

While I do not like his milquetoast-RINO politics, cancer is something I would wish on exceedingly few people.

My prayers for him and his family.

“My first treatment will begin on Monday,” Dole, 97, said in a statement.”

Why?

At 97 years old, I would be looking into hospice care and hope the nurses had a good stock of morphine on hand. Chemo and/or radiation would be the last thing I would want. But that’s just me. Best wishes to him if he wants to go forward with aggressive treatment. Miracles do happen.

Prayers up for Bob, what a terrible thing to happen at his age.

At 97, I’m not sure I would put myself through treatment. That’s a great run. I’d rather have fewer quality days than more days, but suckier due to chemo sickness. At at stage 4, likely the same outcome.

I was thinking the same thing.

I remember when my brother in law was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer (non-smoker) and they gave him a year at the most. He said why undergo these treatments that will make a person feel horrible when he would rather enjoy his last days with family and close friends. He lived just three months after the diagnosis. No previous symptoms either.

Treatment at that age

I agree, Dad was 83 when he got liver cancer, the doc said I can give you 6 months or so more and it will not be pleasant. Dad said no thanks and was around about 2 months. We all were okay with that.
