Texas governor calls for probe into power grid operator ERCOT
CNBC ^ | TUE, FEB 16 20218:24 PM EST | Staff

Brian Sullivan reports a combination of factors such as a colder-than-expected storm, an industry unprepared for winter weather and a shortage of energy and wind power have created the massive power and water shortage in Texas. Texas also relies on nonprofit, Electric Reliability Council of Texas for its electric power grid, unlike other areas in the U.S., which is problematic. He joins Shep Smith to discuss.

it was the damn windmills that froze! who the hell from Texas approved making 25% of our power reliant on the freaking WIND!!>!>!>????

Well, If you are going to do that then at least study the programs that have had success and not go for the cheapest way to do it.

Abbott obviously. He’s in charge. Buck stops with him. There’s no way he didn’t approve it. Hell, The entire legislature is republican so there’s that.

Placing short term profits over forcing winterize and the associated lower margins or higher tariff rates that are passed through.

The downside of privatization of public resources is that the incentives aren't to deliver a service to consumers, they're to maximize profit, deliver dividends to shareholders, and collect big bonuses. And when the SHTF, you can resign with your golden parachute and go home to your big house and your fat bank account and let the next poor sap clean up your mess.

What refineries were eliminated name one please. Texas city and Valero both have expanded capacity in the last decade. Do tell I’m in Texas city on the regular catching a ride to rigs in the gulf. Port A was completely rebuilt after Ike. 30% of the USA liquid fuels come from those three places. Wind has never replaced liquid petrochemicals or fuel its a myth that wind or solar was substituted for them. Texas has installed 31,000 megawatts of wind moslty in west texas and panhandle but that has zero influence on the refineries on the gulf coast. Texas since 2008 has fraced not one but 4 basins for natural gas on a massive scale. The Barnett, Permian, Eagle ford, and Delaware basins I personally have drilled well over 500 wells since 2008 in all four of those basins it is the reason gas fell from $12MMbtu to $2.5 and why 40+% of Texas power capacity is gas fired coal and nuclear simply cannot.complete.economic with $3 mmbtu gas. Putting so much capacity in one fuel that doesn’t have a large.scale.storage medium.is why we lost 30,000 megawatts of it in a single night.

Why don't windmills freeze in places like Iowa, Minnesota, and North Dakota?

I dont know, maybe ice storms are not as likely there? Because it was the ice, not snow that was the issue.

Seriously? Ice storms are less likely in Minnesota and North Dakota than in Texas?

Do not confuse total power consumption vs installed power capacity. The 25% is total consumption. Texas has over 125,000 megawatts of installed capacity wind is only 31,000 of that. Texas has more than enough capacity to not use a single.electron of wind power. Peak demand record was set monday night at 69,000 megawatts at that time 42,000 megawatts of thermal capacity was falling offline due to the cold or lack of natural gas. Leaving 52000 megawatts plus 5600 megawatts of wind it was then a stage 3 emergency and 10,000 megawatts of demand was shed.immediately via blackouts. The grid frequency dropped to 59.2 hz which is near total collapse and another 5000 megawatts was shed immediately the grid.recovered to 59.6hz and stabilized just under 60 this is as close to total collapse as one can come if the grid went down a black start would take weeks to synchronise and restart it. Wind helped keep 5600 megawatts online and thats 56000 homes that would have been dropped as well. I.watched the ercot live data stream all night Monday Texas came within a few minutes of being without power for three weeks to a month in some places it.could have been.apocalyptic. The failure.was thermal power had none of it.failed and every turbine gone down nothing would have been shed.

I get the feeling that this was all planned in advance, waiting for the weather to accomplish the goal.......................

The long term outages were planned but they needed the cover of rolling blackouts. You cannot cycle the grid off and on every 15 to 45 minutes the start up surges alone would wreak your.transformers and reactive power capacitors in short order. There was always going to be a group of demand that once shed was staying down for hours if not days. Ercot had to shed 15,000 megawatts to save the grid from undervolt and a frequency collapse. A full collapse would mean a black start which has never been attempted and would take month to months to bring every portion back into resonance and synchronization. If gas had not.gone short peaker turbines could have been brought online to ride through the demsnd peaks regardless of the wind output Texas has more than enough capacity to not even use wind power the limit mondat night was the gas grid was also near collapse and residential has priority for gas service so power plants were curtailed. Add in the losa of unit.one of the STP nuclear and two large coal plants that cooling towers.froze and it was a cascading failure. Ercot has no choice but to shed load or we would all be in madmax type black outs

John Galt is behind all of this?

No, John Galt’s meaning was that when the system ultimately collapses, they, meaning John and his comrades could now take back and get things running again....................

Please keep posting. You are the only one making sense. I didn’t know Texas had little or no natural gas storage capacity.

Because Texas has so many gas and oil wells the.reservoirs themselves are the storage normally if Texas needs more gas the wells are opened up more and the Y gas plants in the midstream increase output along with the line pumps moving more to the city gate terminals. The pipelines themselves provide some storage capacity aa you can go from 500psi to 750 or 1000 main line pressures as long as the line can take the extra pressures. Being so close to the source allows just in time delivery to be the norm. That’s until record cold freezes well heads, gathering lines and demand exceeds supply at all levels of use. Texas should mine out some salt domes and put a few billion cf in storage just for surge demands or convert some turbines to run dual fuel with fuel oil and keep tanks on site like a coal plant keeps a coal pile. So if gas gets short you fire the stored oil on-site.

I noticed the marching orders have gone out to liberals to protect green energy and excoriate the “evil” business folks behind ERCOT and others.

Time for these idiots to be probed. This all started with T. Boo e Pickens and Rick Perry. You’re a freaken energy state sitting on 2 of the biggest natural gas reserves in the world and you have wind farms? Nuke Austin from space and return to sanity! Its these progressive idiots responsible for this mess....soon to be forgotten when the temp goes up over the weekend.

Retail strip centers usually don’t have generators capable of running for days. I was out all over the city and most still had power where homes nearby did not. Ercot claimed they had no choice to use controlled rolling blackouts yet at the same time they would say they don’t know where the blackouts will be or how long in duration they would last. So which is it? If they are controlled blackouts then they would know where when and for how long. So which is it? All I can say is Ercot has some serious explaining to do. My opinion, these people are lying their asses off. This was a leftists manufactured crisis. Ercot is about to find out this is not California.

What’s with Gov. Abbott announcing the STNP nuclear power plant had to be restored? Why, with the warnings last week, wasn’t the nuke plant going full bore for the past 4 days!??

Why was gas sold to other states iinstead of being kept for Texas, until Abbott issed an executive order to sell the gas only to Texas utilities?

What were the screwups that caused coal plants to be unavailable for the last several days?

Expect massive fingerpointing and CYA actions by politicians, ERCOT, utilities, and local electricity agencies!!
