Vietnam has culled more 100,000 poultry so far this year in a bid to contain the spread of bird flu in the Southeast Asian country, the government said on Monday.
The country has reported outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N1 and H5N6 bird flu strains in 14 provinces, the government said in a statement on its website.
“The risk for the outbreaks to spread on a larger scale is very high,” the statement said.

Uh oh, more shelter in place
My cat takes care of a bird once in awhile. Should I quarantine him?
Do the birds pose threats?
LOL...quick, close all places that serve chicken and keep all chickens out of USA!
100,000 chickens? Plenty more where they came from.
Bird flus that cross over into humans typically are very deadly. H5N1 in humans has about a 60% fatality rate. H7N9 in humans has about a 40% fatality rate. I don’t know if the H5N6 mentioned in the article can infect humans. Bird flus that infect humans are rarely transmissible from person to person.
Bird flus are also a big problem for the poultry industry, because some influenzas can kill a whole flock in days.
Many, if not all, human influenzas originated in birds. They often start to circulate in a host such as pigs before they make the jump into humans and become true human pathogens.
Whenever a bird flu is found in domestic animals, the affected animals are culled, both to prevent more livestock losses and to prevent the disease from becoming a human pathogen.
I know we are not supposed to swear, but this would be a good place for the Oh Jeez guy...
“Do the birds pose threats?”
Yes. He brought a live one in one day and lost his grip on it. 10 minutes of feathers and the cat knocking things over to get it back until I grabbed the bird and tossed it back out. El Gato was pissed off at me.
They weren’t wearing masks?
Wow. A disease from a third world country. I’m shocked
Some gratitude. He brought you a present and you didn’t even kill it or share it with him.
Weren’t TRUMP hats on birds enough? Now you want them wearing masks? How are they supposed to peck birdseed?
Veterinarians have been on alert to the possibility of release of bioweapons on livestock. I attended graduate school at one of the largest veterinary schools in the nation and this was an issue years ago. Pay attention to this story, it may be a natural outbreak, maybe not.
If the chickens spoke Chinese and greeted people with “Wu Who”, you know where they flu in from.
America had bird and swine flu along with a helping of Ebola (under Bush and Obunghole) and America really didn’t blink as those in thier own right were very deadly. I am just keeping things real.
The thing is, the more deadly a disease is, the less transmissible it generally is.
We have bird flus here, too, but our cultural practices don’t really enable them to jump to humans. And we watch the pigs, since they are a known incubator for influenza viruses to become human pathogens.
The only Ebola and Marburg cases in the US were imported, and never presented a threat to the population.
