Coke Sets Diversity Targets, Financial Penalties for Outside Lawyers
The Atlanta Journal Consitutuion ^ | January 28, 2021 | Matt Kempner

Coca-Cola said it will require diversity among law firms who bill it for work in the United States — and reduce payments if they don’t comply.

The Atlanta-based beverage giant’s general counsel, a recent hire from the top ranks of Ford, disclosed the changes in a letter Thursday to law firms the company uses.

“Quite simply, we are no longer interested in discussing motivations, programs, or excuses for little to no progress – it’s the results that we are demanding and will measure going forward,” Bradley Gayton wrote.

And he told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he hopes other major companies make similar moves to “change the trajectory” of diversity in the field.

The specific targets and penalties come after many Fortune 500 companies pledged to address racial inequality more aggressively in the wake of last year’s widespread Black Lives Matter protests.

Does this general counsel box checker even care about the quality of the legal work he is getting for Coca-Cola? If diversity is such a top priority in the area of legal work, why doesn't he hire all the diverse lawyers he wants and do all of Coke's legal work in-house?

Go woke, go broke.

Far too many Fortune 100 type companies are demanding quotas. This is racism.

I’ve got news form the market squeezes out the affirmative-action diversity hires especially in law firms

Coca-Cola is racist - they're trying to force others to hire the employees Coca-Cola won't hire. This is very bad optics and is going to deservedly come back an bite them hard.

Be careful, Coke. Your continued level of success is anything but guaranteed with the changing refreshment habits of today’s youth. Soda pop is not always their first choice.
You’re going to ‘diversify’ your company out of the market share. Tell us, Coke, are you planning to donate another 2.5 Million Dollars to BLM this year too? You darn well betta!

Gee, I just found a few roaches in my Coke, I feel sick.

I wonder if I can find a legal firm to sue Coke?

Don’t drink any products from Coca Cola. None of them are good for your health

I am a partner in a law firm and I will not represent Coca Cola under any circumstances in light of this.

They have no role in managing my business.

Several Federal government agencies require contractors come from agencies checking any number of “diverse and inclusive” boxes, and we see where that gets them with talent quality.

This will lead to agencies with lower quality attorneys leaving Coke open to legal issues they can’t adequately defend. Should be fun to watch.

Coke will hire the Law Firm —— A.J. Calhoun, Amos Jones and Andy Brown. Fitting for the Atlanta area!

Some judge or HRC panel somewhere will prosecute you for refusing to “bake the cake”.
