Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Health Department understated the number of New Yorkers who died in nursing homes during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic by more than 50 percent as the facilities struggled to properly isolate and treat residents amid a state order they not turn away COVID-19 patients.
The bombshell finding was contained in a new 76-page report released Thursday by state Attorney General Letitia James, which found that mismanagement and long-standing problems in the private care business turned nursing homes into COVID death traps.
“As the pandemic and our investigations continue, it is imperative that we understand why the residents of nursing homes in New York unnecessarily suffered at such an alarming rate,” said Attorney General James in a statement.
“While we cannot bring back the individuals we lost to this crisis, this report seeks to offer transparency that the public deserves and to spur increased action to protect our most vulnerable residents,” she continued. “Nursing homes residents and workers deserve to live and work in safe environments, and I will continue to work hard to safeguard this basic right during this precarious time.”
As part of the report, James’ investigators surveyed 62 nursing homes across the state and found that 1,914 residents from those facilities either died there or at nearby hospitals after testing positive for coronavirus or exhibiting symptoms of the deadly disease.
That figure was 56 percent higher than the numbers for those facilities published by the state Department of Health, which only published the number of people who passed away while still at the nursing homes at the time of their deaths, not those who were subsequently taken to a hospital and then died.

My understanding was the nursing homes were required to take Covid patients being released from hospitals for convalescence as new patients, not just “take back” old patients. Did I get it wrong?
Yup. Midway through March both Medicare and Medicaid relaxed regs so facilities could refuse if patients couldn’t be safely returned.
Cuomo sent them back anyway.
The real question that needs to be asked is why did so many facilities knuckle under to Cuomo when Fedzilla had their backs...?
My bet is that the state threatened and/or bribed facilities to take the patients.
If true, there should be no immunity for THAT.

What I meant was, that my understanding was the nursing homes had to take patients from hospitals even if they had not been nursing home patients before. Hospitals routinely send patients to nursing homes for “rehab” when they are too sick or weak to care for themselves, but don’t require the full services of a hospital any longer. They push them out as soon as possible.
Overstated by two-thirds in hospitals; understated by half in nursing homes.

I believe that has been the case before, however that is normally not an issue until you mandate nursing homes MUST take CCPVirus positive patients in, or else even if you are COVOD free or don’t have the facilities/staff to handle them.
They build numerous field hospitals just for COVID that were never used but forced positive patents into nursing homes.

1. Put contagious patients in close proximity to the most vulnerable.
2. Wait for the most vulnerable to get sick and die.
3. Save your federal overlords millions in future costs from the soon-to-be bankrupt social security and Medicare programs, as the dead draw from neither.
Provided that the expense of any hospitalizations prior to death don’t outweigh the above savings, the federal government wins.
