Xi asks Starbucks’ Schultz to help repair US-China ties

BEIJING - President Xi Jinping is asking former CEO Howard Schultz of Starbucks to help repair U.S.-Chinese relations that have plunged to their lowest level in decades amid a tariff war and tension over technology and security.

A letter from Xi to Schultz reported Friday by the official Xinhua News Agency was a rare direct communication from China’s paramount leader to a foreign business figure. Schultz opened Starbucks’ first China outlet in 1999 and is a frequent visitor.

Xinhua gave no indication whether the letter reflected an initiative to ask American corporate leaders to help change policy after President-elect Joe Biden takes office next week.

The Cabinet press office didn’t immediately respond to questions about what Xi wanted Schultz to do and whether he contacted other American business leaders.

Starbucks says it has more than 4,700 stores and 58,000 employees in almost 190 Chinese cities.

Schultz said in 2019 that he was considering running for president as an independent but later dropped that.

Xinhua said Xi was responding to a letter from Schultz that congratulated the Chinese leader on “the completion of a well-off society” under his leadership, Xinhua said.

What is Xi worried about? He’s got the President-elect in his back pocket.

The message I got was Xi has no respect for the State Department, or perhaps can’t roll them over like CN has done for decades. Maybe some good changes were made therein by Trump/Pompeo.

Also, it begs the question for an inquiring journalist ... what is Schultz’s past dealings with China, and what are Schultz’s connections to Joe Buyden?

Starbucks already has thousands of locations in China...what was Schultz sucking up for? Backing in the 2024 Democratic primary?

The import tax on coffee beans that Chinese Starbucks have to pay is very high (although they sell far more milk and sugar than actual coffee). I'm sure China will agree to forgo the import taxes on Starbucks if Trump's tariffs are removed.

Then they can sit down and have an over-priced, lousy cup of coffee which Schultz can provide.

You know about that coffee that comes from beans that have passed through the intestines of a civet. IMO Starbucks coffee tastes like someone just added water to the stuff left after the beans had been picked out.

Ah, yes - Starbucks.

Got to admit that it's one of the first things that comes to my mind when I think of toeing the totalitarian line.
