Brace Yourself, New York. With legislative supermajorities in Albany, Democrats look poised to push the state even further leftward.
City Journal ^ | November 27, 2020 | E. J. McMahon

As if a second wave of Covid-19 infections weren’t enough, New York’s prospects for economic recovery will face new headwinds—from Albany.

When most of the state’s record 1.9 million mail-in ballots were finally counted this week, it became clear that the New York State Senate’s existing 40-member Democratic majority would grow by at least two seats—giving them their first-ever two-thirds supermajority of the 63-member chamber, enough to override gubernatorial vetoes.

The landmark comes two years after Democrats took control of the legislature’s upper house for only the third time since World War II. Combined with their long-standing supermajority in the 150-member assembly, legislative Democrats now are positioned to have the final word on New York State’s response to enormous state and local budget gaps created by the instant pandemic recession last spring.

As of November, Albany faced a budget shortfall of about $8 billion for the current fiscal year and $16.7 billion for 2022, which begins April 1. Allowing for Governor Cuomo’s habitual inflation of budget numbers, reduce those projected deficits by one-third and the outlook for Albany remains as difficult and challenging as it’s ever been. Federal aid, if and when it flows, will be only a temporary stopgap.

Over the past 25 years, the state government has become increasingly dependent on revenues generated in Manhattan offices and trading floors that remain largely vacant. Government spending, now running far ahead of even the most optimistic revenue projections, must adjust to new economic realities.

But economic reality doesn’t factor into the rising Albany worldview. On average, the state’s incoming class of legislators are more inclined to tax, spend, and regulate—and far from hesitating to impose more restrictions on a shaky economy, they see the pandemic-driven crisis as an opportunity to be exploited.

You’ll like it here in South Carolina. The bluest area is Greenville-Spartanburg but the rest of the Palmetto State is gun-friendly red.

Lived here since leaving active duty in 1972. Would not want to live anywhere else.

More “wokeness” will just speed the State’s insolvency, with NY City leading the way.

I don’t know enough about New York’s political structure, but it seems the rural counties west of the Hudson Valley and north of Albany should have their sheriffs organize posses to resist the impositions of the state government. Have the posses stop state police and bureaucrats from enforcing their edicts. The counties should hold a convention and declare themselves a new state. This pattern should be applied on the three West Coast states. Colorado, New Mexico, etc. Perhaps the western and southern countries of Virginia could ask for admission into West Virginia, or southeast New Mexico into Texas. Would West Virginia or Texas be willing to send their police forces into the secessionist counties to support local posses?

If these people are bold and organized enough to try and steal a Presidential Election, why not steal some local elections that NOBODY pays much attention to? It wouldn’t take long to takeover State Houses/Senates across the country.

I snickered at that too. Biden’s going to take care of New York’s financial woes. I’m sure a huge stimulus will be forth coming.

If they ever get Puerto Rico, I’d hope the republicans counter with making NYC their own state so New York can become a republican state and call New York City crazy state or whatever.

The whole country is like that, a sea of red with small pockets of high population urban areas that are blue.

Cuomo is counting on that. The other option they have is to skyrocket taxes on those that are left.

in the decades old control of some states, like Wash, Oregone, etc...it has been ingrained that the rats just out vote the pubs....I just don't believe that....

the fix has been in for some time...

This just means rich people will be moving out of NY at a faster rate. Same with upper middle class.

Why would you assume that the NY elections aren’t riddled with fraud? These people aren’t getting what they voted for, they are getting railroaded by traitors and organized crime.

That is exactly the solution to the problem of rat-run high-density populations determining the outcome for an entire state. Every, say, county, should have one state electoral vote, that evens things out within a state real well. Especially if used to elect people to state offices.

So glad I picked up and moved the whole family. All I hear about from our friends is how our neighborhood (Upper West Side) is becoming progressively unlivable. I’m on a dirt road now and loving it

Our mostly pub county has a demonrat sheriff who knelt with BLM, so...He got in only because he was a sheriff deputy.
Personally having worked with him, I knew he was an ego maniac so i voted for the pubbie outsider
He won because he convinced all the county employees to vote for him. They now all have buyer’s remorse.
