U.S. Senators Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) announced legislation Wednesday aimed to bring mask mandates to the entire U.S., saying that “overwhelming scientific evidence” has shown that masks reduce the spread of Covid-19, which is now taking a grim toll on the country at levels never before seen.
-The bill would set aside $5 billion in federal funding that would then be given to states and local governments in the form of grants.
-Money would be withheld from states that do not have a mask mandate in place.
-Funding would be contingent upon mandates that require face coverings in public, “including in each place of business,” with some common exceptions, like outdoor spaces where social distancing is of ease, children under the age of two and the eating of food.
-The bill is called the ‘‘Encouraging Masks for All Act of 2020.’’

Bzzt. (Mostly) wrong answer. Most virus particles that are emitted from people are attached to spittle or similar excretions much larger than 1 micron. And a “good” mask will block those secretions from going all over into an environment that an infected person is in (grocery store, mall, restaurant, etc).
You’re correct, however, that most masks won’t block virus particles that are say, exhaled and NOT attached to a larger molecule. But if we can reduce say, 70-90% of virus particles, it’s a hell of a lot better than ZERO percent, which is what you get when people argue about and ignore the science behind masks.
The standards used to test masks are set where they are for particle size because that has been found to be the most difficult size to filter (0.1 - 0.3 micron). It doesn’t mean the mask cannot as or more efficiently filter smaller or larger particles. An N95 mask will filter particles smaller than 0.1 micron - usually more effectively than 95%. NIOSH is pretty clear on this.
If the masks worked as well as they said they would, the masks would have worked as well as they said they would.
Masks are virus accumulators that build up high loads of virus that are then picked up by the hand and distributed to everything the hand touches. This is why states with strict mask mandates have higher rates of new cases.

Also note that most places ask to wear a mask OR keep 6 feet distant.
It’s stupidity, all around. I wear a mask by choice. But outside is dumb.

While I agree with the size science that only works in labs and text books.
In the real untrained world that I have observed as I have sit and watched John Q Public enter and exit businesses it doesn’t work out that well.
JQP takes mask that has been saturated by infected snot and grabs it with their bare hand thereby now contaminating their hand that then grabs a door handle, cart, or product on the shelf and then the contaminates wait for the next victim to arrive. JQP puts infected snot mask and stuffs it in their pocket once in vehicle and repeats the above process all over again in the next store.
Mask for the general sheeple public are super spreaders in my opinion, but your mileage may vary.
It has been said by many doctors and numerous studies that “surgical” masks only offer “some” protection when fitted properly, worn properly, not touched and disposed of properly. All of which requires training to accomplish.
But even then surgical masks are not really meant to protect the doctor or the patient from respiratory viruses. Resp. viruses don’t really take hold in the body through open wounds such as injuries or surgical openings. They require mucous membranes to replicate and proximity to the lungs and sinuses.
Surgical masks are primarily meant to keep the doctor’s bacteria, which is ever present in all healthy people, from entering openings in soft tissue and the body cavity.
I need to get hubby on this because he knows good rebuttal for the 'overwhelming scientific evidence'.
BTW, isn't it funny how CDC/Fauci predicted, months ago, a resurgence of the virus? A pyshic?
The generally ineffective placebo masks are “better than nothing”. But not much.
I work for a company I just made up called the Social Distancing Institute. Through our grants, we have discovered that the following diseases can also be stopped through wearing masks at all times and mandatory social distancing:

So remember to always wear your mask and never come within 6 feet of your nearest person. It isn’t about you, it is about keeping others alive!
if we all have to wear face masks like billy the kid, then will we all get handguns to go along with the face masks? that seems only reasonable to me... :)
