t may contain the “Crossroads of the World,” but Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday that Manhattan is “not the center of our universe.”
Only about 10 percent of Manhattan office workers were back as of Sept. 18, more than six months after the coronavirus pandemic upended life in the Big Apple, the Wall Street Journal had reported, citing data from commercial real estate services firm CBRE Group Inc.
“When Mayor de Blasio makes dismissive comments about the dire lack of commercial activity in Midtown, he’s really dismissing the needs of hundreds of thousands of everyday New Yorkers who will remain unemployed or struggling until that activity returns,” said James Whelan, president of the Real Estate Board of New York.
Kathryn Wylde, head of the Partnership for New York City, a leading business group representing 300 CEOs, said the “irony” is “that the economy of Manhattan’s Central Business Districts is operating remotely, but at full steam.”
“The office buildings are empty but people are still employed and revenues are flowing. On the other hand, the neighborhood commercial districts have a lot of activity, but they are running on zero margins and piling up debt during the rent moratorium,” Wylde said.
City Councilman Keith Powers (D-Manhattan) said, “The mayor’s failure to recognize Midtown’s central role in the city’s economic recovery is concerning.”
“For tens of thousands of New Yorkers out of a job — from Broadway to the hotel industry — Midtown’s comeback is inextricably tied to the city’s recovery,” the politician said.

...hmmm, well, the center of our galaxy is a black hole. And, wherever the center of the universe is, it’s probably a black hole, too.
And that’s precisely where Midtown is headed.
LOL. I have friends who have relatives in NY, who said that Bedford-Stuyvesant is being gentrified. If true, maybe some real estate bargains there?
Once again a strong majority of New Yorkers voted for Dems this month, so I don’t give a rat’s butt what happens to them. They want Leftist totalitarians for mayor, governor and other elected reps, go for it but don’t whine to the rest of us about it.
It isn’t ANYMORE!! EMBRACE THE SUCK!!!!
The Federal Givernment
What is weird about DeBlasio’s statement is that there’s no evidence that he particularly cares about the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens or Staten Island, either.
Is his goal to piss off absolutely EVERYONE in NY?
His voters don’t live in Midtown. So he doesn’t care.
He will start caring when the “work from home” professional people get re-assigned to officially be working from Texas, and change their tax residence to Florida.
Why did young people WANT to live in NYC? Partially, it was for the night life, Broadway, great restaurants — which DeBlasio closed. Why stay home in a tiny NYC apartment?
His voters don’t live in Midtown.
No shortage of folks in the outer boroughs earning their living in Manhattan. You used to see them on the Williamsburg Bridge, etc. every day.
They are infecting the south pretty hard.
Beverly Hillbillies show did a great job keeping them out, we dont have that anymore. Damn
no no no... south Bronx
Adventure seekers.
LOL!!!
Yes, that’s exactly what they think.
They’re dead seat on killing the Golden Goose too.
It DOES seem like that is his goal, no? Either that, or he really is just that stupid.
