Trump: No
National Review ^ | October 15, 2020 11:17 AM | Ramesh Ponnuru

President Trump has delivered on some important issues. If Roe v. Wade is overturned in the next decade, his appointment of conservative justices will be a cause of a great advance in human rights. He signed a law that included some of the tax relief for parents I’ve been advocating for 15 years, and eliminated the individual mandate that was the most objectionable feature of Obamacare. Whether we’re talking about religious liberty, school choice, or Title IX, Trump’s policies are much better than those of Joe Biden. On many issues, Trump has far exceeded the expectations I had when he won the 2016 election.

I’m still not voting for him.

It’s not because I have exceptionally high standards for presidential candidates, or yearn for the resurrection of the pre-Trump Republican Party, or find it impossible to overlook some points of disagreement with Trump. It’s not even because his continuation in office may in the long run prove destructive of conservative causes. So it may, but keeping the bird in the hand is a good rule of prudence.

I’m not voting for him, rather, because his character flaws keep him from meeting the threshold conditions to be entrusted with the presidency. All presidents have lapses in judgment, honesty, and self-control; many of them have even been wanting, at least sometimes, in decency and public-spiritedness. Trump is alarmingly deficient in all of these qualities at once, and their lack has marked every day of his presidency.

You don’t have to believe any anonymous sources in the news to see it. You need only watch the president and listen to him. On any given day, he will be calling a former member of his administration a “moron,” or taking shots at one of its current members. Or live-tweeting his feelings about the

Reelecting China Mitch and Linda Grahmnesty will not result in new outcomes. The GOP is what it is. Sorry.

Yeah. Right.

That is why Amy Coney Barret is likely the next Supreme Court justice, and over 200 originalist judges have been appointed to Article III courts.

It is why the old Media, which was the power behind the throne, more than either party, is held in low regard, and has shed their "objective" shield to show themselves as partisan hacks.

We may lose, but if President Trump wins, the revolution against the ruling elite will continue to move forward.

Your choices:

1) A flawed human being whose record in his first term is outstanding, or

2) A crook with dementia who has never done anything of substance, who would sell out the country, and who is backed up by a corrupt organization which is drooling over the opportunity to reinstate the graft and cronyism that ended four years ago.

Yeah, tough choice, idiot.

Wishful thinking. The GOP is structurally corrupt and has exactly zero interest in reform.

A guy can dream. No Trump supporter I know will be content with old-school GOPe politics. I know that’s anecdotal but I’m an optimist. Sometimes.

Gorsuch and Kavanaugh have already voted with Democrats on very important issues. ACB will likely do the same. They are better than Democrat judges but a few judges are not going to change the trajectory we are on. President Trump, while a great man and POTUS, will ultimately only be a fart in the beltway hurricane. The past four years have shown us all of our institutions are irredeemably corrupt and unreformable.

NR ran three related pieces, all cross referenced. Andrew McCarthy wrote a terrific “Trump, yes” piece. That was well received here yesterday. Ponnuru wrote this. Charles C.W. Cooke wrote the “Trump, Maybe” piece. I don’t think NR has taken a formal editorial position yet.

HOW I FEEL ABOUT TRUMP ~ by Steve Harvey and Me.

You’ve been on vacation for two weeks, you come home, and your basement is infested with raccoons.. Hundreds of rabid, messy, mean raccoons have overtaken your basement.. You want them gone immediately!.. You call the city and 4 different exterminators, but nobody can handle the job.. But there is this one guy, and he guarantees to get rid of them, so you hire him.. You don’t care if the guy smells, you don’t care if the guy swears, you don’t care if he’s an alcoholic, you don’t care how many times he’s been married, you don’t care if he has a plumber’s crack, you simply want those raccoons gone!.. You want your problem fixed!.. He’s the guy.. He’s the best!

Here’s why we want Trump: Yes, he’s a bit of a jerk; Yes, he’s an egomaniac; but we don’t care!.. The country is a mess because politicians suck, the Republicans and Democrats can be two-faced and gutless, and illegals are everywhere.. We want it all fixed!.. We don’t care that Trump is crude, we don’t care that he insults people, we don’t care that he has changed positions, we don’t care that he’s been married 3 times, we don’t care that he fights with Megyn Kelly and Rosie O’Donnell, we don’t care that he doesn’t know the name of some Muslim terrorist.. This country became weak and bankrupt, our enemies were making fun of us, we are being invaded by illegals, we are becoming a nation of victims where every Tom, Ricardo, and Hasid is a special group with special rights to a point where we don’t even recognize the country we were born and raised in; “AND WE JUST WANT IT FIXED”.. And Trump is the only guy who seems to understand what the people want..

We’re sick of politicians, sick of the Democratic Party, sick of the Republican Party, and sick of illegals!.. We just want this thing fixed.. Trump may not be a Saint, but we didn’t vote for a Pope.. We voted for a man who doesn’t have lobbyist money holding him back, a man who doesn’t have political correctness restraining him.. We all know that he has been very successful, he’s a good negotiator, he has built a lot of things, and he’s also NOT a politician, NOT a cowardly politician.!.. And he says he’ll fix it.. And we believe him because he is too much of an egotist to be proven wrong, or looked at and called a liar.. Also, we don’t care if the guy has bad hair.. We just want those raccoons gone, out of our house, NOW!!!

Good grief these people are awful.

Better to leave mutilated newborns gasping for air than have a man who insults his enemies in public. Obscene.

The past four years have shown us all of our institutions are irredeemably corrupt and unreformable.

We have faced a lot of corruption in the last 240 years.

*All* is a difficult word to defend.

A great many institutions are and have been corrupt.

As for being irredeemably corrupt and unreformable, we will see.

This writer is not the Republican Party. Not even an official representative. Just a horrible man who writes for National Review.

All we can do now is reelect POTUS.

Most of all we need a genuine opposition party to the progressive-corportist alliance that currently controls both the GOP and Dems.

The GOP has shown they will never be that opposition party by openly colluding with Democrats against POTUS to stop the MAGA agenda. If Main Street ever got close to control of the GOP the RINOs would simply throw in with the Democrats again and outflank us. I wish it was different but Trump has shown us the truth since he came down that escalator. I say all that after having happily voted for McCain, Romney and Bush.

These people don’t think clearly. They have an obsession that they cannot or will not overcome. They are to be pitied.

Yes, we did. We also had political parties with opposing agendas. We no longer have that. Koch and Soros agree on more than they disagree.

Both parties are very close in the major issues now: open borders, unfair trade, getting health care off corporate books, etc.

To win this battle we must have an army: an opposition party. We don’t have that and it’s not going to happen because time is short. Within a decade or two TX and FL will follow CA into the one party state Democrat column. Then it will be Bye Bye Miss American Pie. Adios America.

Cogent response, thank you. I voted for Dole, the Bushes, McCain and Romney while holding my nose. I saw them all as weak but the only available option as a conservative. Only the Bushes won of course and they were hardly conservatives.

I too hope a 2nd Trump term will force the GOP to reform into something new... tough, mighty and ethical.

You are right: all we can do now is reelect POTUS.

I don't know if he's as devious as that or thinks ahead that much. Ponnuru agrees with much of what President Trump is doing but is upset that Trump hasn't changed or "grown" in office. Trump is doing what he wants in many regards, but not behaving as he would like, and for some people that can be infuriating.

I don't think that policy-wise Ponnuru would be terribly upset if Trump wins. On the other hand, he was for impeachment, so it's clear that he really, really, really doesn't like Trump. Insulting the guy, though, only makes him think think that he was right to reject Trump.

Dear a Ramesh,

FOAD. We are in the midst of a cold civil war that could go hot. The leftists are telegraphing that they want to punish us after the election and they are not joking.

Clinton’s former Secretary of Labour Robert Reich has called for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission once Joe Biden wins the presidential election, and a blacklist of Trump supporters.

“We need a Truth and Reconciliation Commission,” Reich tweeted. “It would erase Trump’s lies, comfort those who have been harmed by his hatefulness, and name every official, politician, executive and media mogul whose greed and cowardice enabled this catastrophe.”

The left has been planning a violent takeover of America for over a century now and they think now is the time.
