This is known for years! I have attended a solar cell conference around 1995. All the world experts on solar cells admitted of the book exactly that - solar cells are pretty damaging to environment and provide negative of minuscule net energy.
Funny fact - Solar cells energy is also most deadly. Quite a lot of people fell and killed themselves installing and servicing solar cells. Comparing to the amount of energy delivered, solar cell energy is really bloody, paid for by many lives.

After I retired someone offered me a chance to run a solar panel enterprise. $250k+stock options. Couldn't bring myself to do despite the money. Even worse, it was in Cali. 😱🌋🙌
