Something that happened to the last 3 Republican presidents, and to Obama in their first reelection debates. Did not happen to Trump.
Both Bushes,Obama and even the great Ronald Reagan were dead on their feet and had truly horrible first debates.
That's what caused the "Reagan is too old" talk, that he had to salvage with his classic joke about Mondale's youth and inexperience, in a later debate.
Most presidents get so used to being catered to in office, they just aren't ready for their first debate. It's been glaring in every other case in recent history. Obama looked like a tired old grandfather in his first debate.
Trump is so energetic, so used to daily combat with - just about everyone - that he was like the Trump of 2016, taking no prisoners.
I think even IF this was a draw, that's a step forward for Trump.
But I think in post debate analysis, Biden will look terrible refusing to answer direct questions. And Trump made plenty of good points and one liners.
If the brawl was a draw, the historic advantage goes to the President for being ready in the first debate.
I concur with this 100%
My lasting impression of this debate was the utterly awful visual Biden presented on that stage. I honestly thought he looked like they dragged him out of a casket for this spectacle:
Biden was incredibly pale.
Agreed! Good memory. They said Mondale won the first debate. What Trump wanted to do was split Biden from his Left wing support, which he did.
Biden had a “glazed” look
Thank God DJT made it through swimmingly.
I think the biggest problem is Trump should have stalked Biden, then go in for the kill. He did that with Hunter the Coke Nosed criminal and on supporting cops, but the rest of the time he was just poking to poke. Imstead of having the insult or the spansepwer and interrupting, wait, think and go in for the kill. I still give the victory to Trump, but it was a split decision when we all wanted the knock out.
Trump will say everything he wanted to say tonight, but couldn’t, in upcoming rallies and his daily talks with the press.
Biden will be hiden’ in his basement.
I agree. And Biden’s facelift just looks weird. His eyes are drawn so tight it’s just scary.
Biden is dangerous. He talks about green new jobs, thousands of them. Who will pay? Middle class taxpayers thats who.
spansepwer = instant answer
Indeed the take away Trumps a fighter
Good point.
Biden will look terrible refusing to answer direct questions.

That was the big take away from the debate: Biden made no effort whatsoever to answer any questions or provides specifics on anything. All he did was attack Trump all night long. (That’s also what Wallace did.)
Trump wasn’t on his game tonight IMO but at least he was able to cite facts to support his arguments, which provided a nice contrast with the evasive Biden.
I loved Reagan, I really did.
But, Reagan NEVER did what President Trump has accomplished.
Reagan never had round tables. I love them
Reagan never concentrated on bringing jobs HOME
Reagan never pointed out in a “street-like” way what the opposition is doing. I love that.
And on and on
True. And lets not forget how Faux set up Trump in the 2016 debate too.
And guess what? He went on to beat Hillary.
And he became President.
Biden looked bad & sounded bad. He didnt fall over or lose it (though he got close). But he gained no votes.
For those who think Trump might have lost, a thought question:
Name one ISSUE in which Biden laid a glove on Trump. One substantive issue.
Being honest, he might have created some concern about discontinuing Obamacare, but I can’t think of an issue he “won”.
The only thing he did effectively was saying to the audience “he doesn’t care about you at home” but that’s not a substantive issue
I think Trump made the better points on most issues in the debate, Especially the economy and law and order.
