Taiwanese military releases video of troops ‘fending off attack from Chinese mainland’

Taiwanese television broadcast a video on Friday of a military exercise simulating the island coming under attack.

The film, produced by the defence ministry, showed troops firing anti-aircraft, anti-tank and anti-ship missiles in defence of the island against a mock invasion from across the Taiwan Strait, the waterway that separates it from mainland China.

In a statement accompanying the film – which was released on Facebook and released to the media on Thursday – the ministry said Beijing should not underestimate the island’s determination to defend itself.

“The most egotistical country can thoughtlessly provoke a war and the most ignorant government can be caught in the flames of war,” it said, adding that repeated provocation and intimidation by the People’s Liberation Army – mainland China’s military – would not work.

So - all this huff and guff... but if China really wanted to - they would squash Taiwan like a gnat...

I know that title is the actual title of the article, but it could really use a ‘SIMULATED’ in it...

Simulations are useful, but there is no substitute for real life experience.

Reminds me of Finland facing off Stalin’s Soviet Union. Gave the Commie’s a bloody nose and went on to secure an ally for Hitler.

China would win, but it would be a nasty fight. China wants the island with it’s people and resources, just nuking it would not serve their interests.

By both a “face” issue and a force issue, they would have to take it intact, and the Taiwanese have a lot of nasty surprises for air and naval craft approaching the island.

On paper it would seem so however I lived in Taiwan while I was in High School and the geography of Taiwan is such that China’s options are limited in respect to an amphibious invasion which greatly allows Taiwan to concentrate her defenses.

Don’t discount China’s proven willingness to use mass numbers as cannon fodder. Plus - China has a near unlimited weapons collection.

And in doing so their already shaky international standing would hit rock bottom.
No one in their neighborhood trusts the Chi-coms already.
Chi-coms economy is starting to get shaky and the chi-com leaders are simply trying to change the subject.

China will defeat Taiwan with a block aid, cutting off food and energy supplies.

It’s not that simple. The geography of Taiwan creates a problem similar to the Battle of Thermopylae. The Chinese amphibious assault will be restricted to only a few viable locations and they will not be able to flood Taiwan quickly with a massive force.
