Washing hair is about to get a lot more complicated if a trio of Albany Democrats have their way.
A new bill moving through the State Assembly and Senate will require shampoo assistants working in hair salons to complete a minimum of 500 hours of a 1,000-hour course in cosmetology. The completion of 500 hours will entitle applicants to a newly established Shampoo Assistant Certificate.
The legislation is sponsored in the Assembly by Carrie Woerner of Saratoga Springs and John T. McDonald III of Albany. A companion Senate bill was introduced by Sen. Jen Metzger of Middletown.
There is currently no entry for shampoo assistant in the states division of licensing services manual. Outside watchdog groups told The Post the proposal was a ridiculous new regulation that would make it harder for some people to find work even as the state faces historic unemployment.
The job primarily involves draping the client, lathering the head and rinsing, and odd jobs like sweeping hair off the floor.
Its crazy. Talk about being an obstruction to people getting after-school jobs or an entry-level job, or being able to make a living while learning a trade, Cam MacDonald, of the Empire Center for Public Policy, told The Post.
Cosmetology school isnt cheap, with programs in New York running around $13,000. The evidence points to this being a barrier to entry that favors existing cosmetologists and the cosmetology schools, MacDonald said.
Its shocking that with so many New Yorkers out of work that some legislators want to throw obstacles in front of job seekers. Their focus should be on cutting taxes and regulations, not creating more, added Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, a Staten Island Republican.

By way of comparison, the law in Pennsylvania requires a homeschooler in sixth grade to complete 900 hours of education.
There should be a 1,000hr course in “running for office”. You need to be licensed before you can start screwing over people.
pilots license is about 40 hours for comparison.
I didn’t spend anywhere near that amount of time getting my contractors license AND my inspection certificates COMBINED!
Yeah 55 hours for a single engine VFR.
I got $10 says if someone looks closely enough there's a connection between one or both of these "representatives" and someone with an interest in the training business.
next they'll want 500 hours of floor sweeping training
It should be 20,000 hours.. The voters continue to elect Democrats. Hell with them. They[voters] make their bed. Let them sleep in it.
Or getting a slice of licensing fees.
It varies by state, but I’ve heard nearly any small business owner has to get at least 5 different inspections or licenses before opening their doors.
Well, now we know who the beauty school owners donate to.
They couldn’t make the Movie “Shampoo” in this day and age.
If they did a Remake, it would be longer than War and Peace.
They will get it, too. All the dems will rally to vote for it. All the unions will tell their obedient members how to vote on this and they will all say, ‘Yes, Sirrr!’
This kind of government regulation is why the people elected Trump. The Dems will do everything they can to destroy the Capitalist system. Hairstylists in Washington State had to contend with the progressive Senate that passed SB 5326, making it illegal for salons to lease out booth spaces to independent stylists. This late-night legislation caused more than 2,700 hairstylists and salon owners to rally in protest in Olympia. It seems to me, New York needs a little shake-up to let them know who is the boss.
When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion - WHEN YOU SEE THAT IN ORDER TO PRODUCE, YOU NEED TO OBTAIN PERMISSION FROM MEN WHO PRODUCE NOTHING - when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors - when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws dont protect you against them, but protect them against you - when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice - you may know that your society is doomed.
Any Rand
This is just another case of people using government to protect them from competition. The Institute for Justice in Virginia fights against this crapola and also fights for educational choice. They were part of the battle to fight eminent domain in the Kelo case, and have stood up for people who merely want to braid hair but salon operators tried to get laws passed that would force them to attend cosmetology school and be licensed.

isn’t it amazing there are absolutely no qualifications or education required to be a politician. Which is why politics attracts the dumbest and most worthless people in the world.
And these ridiculous fools make the laws to rule over everyone else.

There it is.
