A woman spent years posing as a bisexual Native American scientist and university professor, claiming in recent months to be suffering persistent, months-long symptoms of COVID-19 until finally announcing that the fictitious persona she created had died from the disease.
The woman, BethAnn McLaughlin, a former assistant professor of neurology at Vanderbilt University, operated the Twitter account with the handle @Sciencing_Bi. She claimed to have contracted the coronavirus in April, according to a BuzzFeed News investigation, and said she suffered persistent symptoms that included a "loss of language fluency."
On Tuesday, BethAnn McLaughlin confirmed in a statement to The New York Times that she had been responsible for the Twitter account.
"I take full responsibility for my involvement in creating the @Sciencing_Bi Twitter account," she said in a statement to the New York Times, sent through a lawyer. "My actions are inexcusable. I apologize without reservation to all the people I hurt."

Of course, this is OUR FAULT. If we won’t harass, intimidate, discriminate, assault and murder gay/female/minority people, they have to make it up. Being able to claim they are victims is central to their identity and political power.
It always cracks me up when people tell me how these hoaxes discredit actual hate crimes. Then when asked to name the “actual hate crimes”, they spout off a list of proven HOAXES or unverified stories!

There’s the problem right there. She didn’t also pose as a Muslim.
I would not do it, but if one has decided to invent an imaginary person, and have them interact with people online only, it’s not at all hard to do.
In today’s easily triggered world, this sort of scam has never been easier for the ambitious but deceitful person. People create grand and elaborate social causes out of thin air. Some may do it as a Lark, to see how many would be gullible to take them seriously.

Well, not as bad as the fact that Republican leaders can’t speak Hispanic or Asian (now about 25% of the country). Nor can they find anyone fluent in either that can communicate with them...they just let the Dems have their votes.

I worked at Vanderbilt for 11 years. All they care about is “optics”. It means more to them than people, operations or reality, so they were probably fine with all this until her story got blown which changed it to bad optics so now they’ll have to do something for damage control.

The non-existent professor was supposedly a Hopi Indian who left Alabama. Everyone knows that there are no Hopis in Alabama—Andrews Jackson made them go to Arizona on the Trail of Tears.
