HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnamese authorities said on Sunday they were finding it hard to track the origin of a fresh coronavirus outbreak that began in the central city of Danang and has infected around 200 people in recent weeks.

"In Danang, there are many sources of virus, and there are still many infections out there in the community," a government statement said of the city, a popular tourist hotspot with a population of 1.1 million.

The country reported 34 infections on Sunday, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases to 620. The death toll rose by two to five, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long said the strain of the virus detected in the new outbreak is a more contagious one.

He said with the new strain, each infected person may infect about 5-6 people compared to 1.8-2.2 people in the previous period.

This apparent new strain has thus far hit Vietnam, more severely than the original.

This board still apparently has too many fruits on it that are terrified of this thing :-)

I would advise the many thousands of people from free republic that are in Vietnam to be careful.

maybe I’m not being fair and when I’m old I will be very afraid of many things too

Well I’m older than you, so pipe down.

:)

No offense, but I have been careful since February.

When I read the title I thought;

Oh great, an outbreak of Danang Fever. Just what we need another thing for people to panic about.

Lol.

I thought they misspelled dengue fever because I didn’t think it was possible for someone on this board to still be afraid of this virus. Especially where a tougher strain is 50 million miles away in Vietnam.

It’s just annoying at this point

and honestly I want the bitch slap every person in the street I see wearing a mask

I really don’t like biological weapons and the prospect of getting infected with one. I wonder if this new strain is a “natural” mutation or if it is a “perfected” weapon.

I have too many fears and phobias to count. helps my self-esteem to talk tough about 1 that I don’t fear. But I’m sure if I woke up to a dry cough I would be afraid :-)

This theory is fascinating. It prompted me to try to figure out what measles shot i got. Of course..its not the right one. Going to see if my insurance will cover the right one. Interesting that iran didnt do the two shot version

Why do you believe the virus cant mutate. Of course it will. A virologist will tell you that.

in this case it is a man made virus..but it will still eventually mutate.

American companies would rather buy from Vietnamese than from Chinese. Maybe China knows that... and is doing their usual.

There are actually some people who do not think it is responsible, to pretend there is not a serious problem we all need to pay attention to.

I have been very aware of the problem since there were 16 cases in America.

Incidentally, there were also around 16 cases here in Vietnam. I went back to America then. Came back quickly when it was evidently becoming a big issue.

I actually agree with the approach of the leadership, here in Vietnam. It worked.

Now, several days ago, somehow the country let the disease in somehow. NOW the country will return to being locked down to fight the disease.

This time is more serious, people have died. A LOT (relatively) have now been isolated. More will need to be done.

But for 100 days, the country was free of covid.

100 days.
