Alzheimer's blood tests show new promise, giving decades of early warning
Fierce AI Week ^ | 28 July, 2020 | Conor Hale

A new blood test for Alzheimer’s disease has shown it can be just as accurate or better than the current standards for diagnosis, performing nearly on par with potentially expensive PET brain scans and invasive spinal taps for cerebrospinal fluid.

Presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, multiple researchers debuted studies demonstrating how certain proteins found in the bloodstream could warn of the neurodegenerative disease—including up to two decades before any outward signs of dementia.

I told my wife if I get that to just find a doctor who will get some adult stem cells from me and inject them into my brain.

He might have Alzheimer’s. Then again, he may have progressive dementia of a different cause. No matter the cause. He’s obviously impaired and not up to the job.

So you get this test at, say, age 40 and it says you are very likely to get Alzheimer's. That would be pretty devestating to hear. On the other hand, I guess it would let you prioritize things. Preparing financially so your loved ones are taken care of, hitting those bucket list items ASAP, et cetera.

Still, not sure I'd want to know. I mean, if there were a real treatment then you could do something. Otherwise it would just be a giant shadow over you for the rest of your life.

I watched my father die after a 10 year battle with dementia with the signs starting at 69. I’m now 63 and I’d take the test in a heartbeat.

If you let the CDC fund it, thirty days from now we’ll ALL have Alzheimers.

I understand...share with us what you would do if the test was positive...as there is no cure. Aside from getting your affairs in order, then what?

“ Demand Biden take this test BEFORE THE CONVENTION! ” ************* Thinking about two weeks after the convention, Pelosi too. Limits time for new candidate to gain a foothold. Actually, I’m guessing that should Biden flounder badly in the debates Cuomo will be drafted. And, in order to save America from destruction by Trump he will most humbly accept, sarc/💩...

“Still, not sure I’d want to know. I mean, if there were a real treatment then you could do something. Otherwise it would just be a giant shadow over you for the rest of your life.”

We have seen this terrible disease destroy the lives of those inflicted and damage the lives of the family members, friends and co workers of those with the disease.

With some people, there was very little warning, and with some there were warning signs that were ignored by close family members.

Besides stopping them from driving to protect the innocent, there has been basically not a damn thing that could be done to slow down the disease.

I’m sixty. By the time I begin having a hard time, I figure the way we are headed in this country, in this world, I’ll be put on a nice one-way Youth in Asia cruise to The Island. What me worry?

It wouldn’t devastate me at all. It would focus me on evaluation of clinical studies (which I already do for other health concerns) and searching for promising alternative treatments. Since a gene runs in my wife’s family for a disease that is very similar to Alzheimer’s, I am quite familiar with doing just that. It’s killed everyone else in the bloodline, so there isn’t much doubt that it’s coming for her (and eventually my children). However, I do believe the work I have done on this will at least stave it off, if not keep it from manifesting completely.

If I sat around and waited for something to be FDA approved, I might as well just everyone’s affairs in order and be done with it. Thankfully, that isn’t how I operate.

The article doesn’t suggest therapeutic benefit from the test, but it would seem that the fact that certain proteins in the blood predict onset would seem to suggest research into what produces those proteins.

And is there a way to suppress their production or their influence?

“While these new reports are encouraging, these are early results, and we do not yet know how long it will be until these tests are available for clinical use,” said Carrillo. “They need to be tested in long-term, large-scale studies, such as Alzheimer’s clinical trials. In addition, we need to continue research to refine and verify the tests that are the current state-of-the-art—including cerebrospinal fluid and PET imaging biomarkers.”

University PR offices always add a paragraph like this at the end of their weekly press releases announcing medical breakthroughs: 'encouraging', 'do not know how long it will be until available for clinical use', 'need long-term, large scale studies', 'need to continue research to refine'

It runs in my family too. Would you mind sharing your findings? Disease and treatment.
