New York Police Department officers are retiring at a staggering rate amid a crime surge in the city and growing tensions with Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, the Hill reported Thursday.
In the last week, 179 NYPD officers have filed for retirement, which marks a 411% increase from 2019s 35, according to the Hill.
The retirements follow violent riots that roiled the city, De Blasios decision to slash the NYPD budget and the decision to disband the anti-crime unit. Soon after the units 600 plainclothes officers were reassigned to new roles, shootings in the city surged by more than 358% in mid-June.

Cops are very loyal to their communities. I’m surprised more haven’t retired.
Furthermore the fact that NYPD retirements have been put on waiting lists is mostly due to dramatically decreased numbers of the employees who process the retirement applications.
It is possible that the number of NYPD officers who are retiring/resigning has spiked, but I have yet to see a story citing actual statistics on that. Maybe someone here can do so - please ping me if that happens.
Maybe enough cops will leave so the billion cut will be absorbed easy enough, except for citizens needing police help.
Can’t say as I blame them.
I’ll wager that the majority of them leave New York, too.
Met a former NYPD detective at a nursing home a couple of years ago in Jax. He moved to Jax the day after he retired!
He was Chief of Security at the nursing home.
He told me he could not wait to leave NYC!
BTW, he is a good conservative, a pro-Trump, pro-2A guy!
Reap what you sow NYC!!
