As face masks become a societal norm, many people are speaking out against those who are choosing not to wear them, and some critics say that wearing a mask may determine how smart you are.

John Lundin, a self-described environmental activist and author, recently tweeted, “A mask is not a political statement. It’s an IQ test.” His tweet was met with many comments of support.

A recent Gallup/Knight Foundation poll that asked, “In the past 7 days, how often did you wear a mask or cloth face covering outside your home?” showed that 30% of high school graduates, 41% of college graduates and 46% of postgraduates always wear masks.

Yet again. The only mechanical plus for masks is reducing the spreading of the wearers exhalations. On the intake side of the equation, it's a waste of time. So if you want to make people FEEL safe from your spewage, wear one. If YOU feel like it. Virus don't care about no steenkin' masks.

It asks whether you are smart for wearing a mask, but the only metric given is education.

I think we all know people educated beyond their intelligence.

The karens demand masks for all.

I have zero use for a karen.

Some of the karens gone wild on twitter are funny and kind of sad at the same time.

_____________

Here’s what I don’t get. If the mask can’t prevent the virus from getting through your mask, how can it prevent your exhalations from getting through?

I always wear one during flu season but flu season is over. Now I only wear one to the doctor’s office because of the sign that says “mask required”. I’m going to the orthopedic doctor in Knoxville and they are required. With me it just depends on where I am and if it’s flu season or not.

Yes, it is most certainly an IQ test. Smart people know how to read data points and don’t wear masks

Civil disobedience.

I wear one going through the door and immediately remove it. I wear it again checking out. No one has accosted me yet.

I have been seen and ignored by employees who appear preoccupied with other things and couldn't care less. I'll ignore them if they accost me; until the manager appears and asks me to leave.

Then they get to re-stock my cartful of merchanidse.

It means you can live with less oxygen.

Much like lower animals like fungi. Good on you I say.

It can’t.

See the problem here?

It’s a charade to find out how easily we can all be subjected to an arbitrary “social norm”.

So here’s an experiment.

The particle size of a virus is no greater than .03 micron. The particle size of the fumes from a wood fire is about .03 microns. If you said “Gee, those are the same size,” give yourself ten points.

Dutifully don your fashion mask and light a few matches to simulate a wood fire. Breathe deep. If you smell smoke and say “Gee, I smell smoke, so my fashion mask is allowing the inhalation of .03 micron smoke, it must be completely useless to combat a .03 micron virus.” Give yourself 20 points.

For extra credit, repeat the same experiment with a N95 mask. Breathe Deep and what do you know, you still can smell smoke.

No one I know smokes and I’m not going to buy a pack of cigarettes to do the experiment in reverse but it might be fun to try.
