Possible Egyptian 'direct' intervention in Libya becomes legitimate: President Sisi

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi checked on the forces in the Western Military Zone Saturday telling them, "The Egyptian Army is one of the strongest in the region. Yet, it is a wise army that protects but doesn't threaten, and is able to defend the national security of Egypt within and beyond its borders."

The president said that the Air Force, the Special Forces, and the Border Guards have been securing 1,200 kilometers of borders with Libya for seven years, and accomplishing missions that have not been disclosed...

The president warned in his speech in Sidi Barani district in Matrouh Governorate bordering Libya against the foreign intervention in Libya for it composes a threat to regional, European, and global security and stability.

The president asserted the withdrawal of mercenaries from Libya, and the necessity that militias give up their arms to the Libyan National Army (LNA).

"Any direct intervention by Egypt in Libya has become legitimate in line with UNSC resolutions, and upon the call of the legitimate authority in Libya," President Sisi said.

The president underlined the outcomes of Germany Conference held in January stating that all foreign powers shall refrain from supplying arms to Libyan armed groups.

"If Egypt had illegitimate goals in Libya, we would have intervened years ago. We would not accept that history documents that we intervened in time of Libya's weakness…Jufrah and Sirte are a red line…The current line must be maintained. The party who would not respect it, would attain neither the west nor the east. The political process must go forward," the president tells a representative of Libyan tribes.

Khalifa Haftar's yearlong Tripoli offensive against the Ankara-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) began to collapse. Believed to have been supplied to the Libyan strongman as early as last year by his backers [Iran's stooges] in the Gulf, the Russian system was meant to be used as a trump card against Turkey's combat unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) air interdiction operations... Analysis of open source data has estimated that up to 9 Pantsir units were lost in quick succession to UAV strikes during May, with footage of the strikes going viral on social media. To add insult to injury, a tenth Pantsir system was dramatically captured by GNA forces, and to great fanfare paraded through Tripoli as a war trophy. It is speculated that the captured Pantsir's final fate is to be picked apart for intelligence purposes.

Egypt is working towards a ceasefire at Libya's eastern and western borders, while also preparing to launch comprehensive political settlement negotiations under the auspices of the UN and to implement the resolutions of the Berlin Conference and the recently announced "Cairo Declaration", backed by Khalifa Haftar and Libya's parliamentary speaker Aguila Saleh...

The Cairo Declaration takes into consideration the international resolutions, UN efforts, and Berlin Conference resolutions towards ending the Libyan crisis, Sisi explained, paving the way for the future of Libya following the withdrawal of foreign forces and the dissolution of military militias...

Sisi also issued a warning to all Libyan and foreign parties from forcibly seizing the strategic city of Sirte and al-Jafra, calling them the "red line" for Egypt's national security.

The president's remarks and visit to the Western Military Command came a day after the release of 23 Egyptians who were detained in the Libyan city of Tarhuna.

A video showing militia members abusing Egyptian laborers in Libya went viral on Tuesday, triggering anger among social media users and Egyptian officials.

President Sisi instructed authorities to return the abducted laborers.

Egyptian authorities managed to secure their release and return them home safely.

Sisi has problems all around him.

Ethiopia is about to shut off his water from the Nile.
There could very well be a war on a few of Egypt’s fronts in the near future.

Absolutely. And Sisi would be doing both Egypt and broader civilization a favor by ejecting Islamist Turkey’s control and influence out of Libya.

An Egyptian filmmaker detained without trial for over two years for making a music video that mocked President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi died on Saturday at a maximum-security prison complex... Police forces arrested the young filmmaker in March 2018 after he directed a music video by Ramy Essam, an Egyptian musician exiled in Sweden. The video featured a song that mocked the general-turned president, comparing him to a fruit date and condemning alleged government corruption... Galal el-Behairy, who wrote the song performed in the video, was also arrested in 2018 after the video provoked the ire of the government when it went viral on social media with millions of views on YouTube... Earlier this year, a US citizen who had gone on a hunger strike as part of a six-year battle against what he insisted was wrongful imprisonment, died in prison of heart failure... Kassem was in Cairo to visit family in August 2013 when his lawyers say he was mistakenly swept up in a dragnet during the violent dispersal of an Islamist sit-in that killed hundreds of people. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison in a 2018 mass trial of over 700 defendants widely condemned by human rights groups.

I don’t think Ethiopia will “shut off” the Nile from Egypt.

That would lead to a major shooting war.

Negotiations have been going on for a long time regarding the dam. Hopefully the current bluster is mostly posturing, and things will be resolved peacefully.

The Blue Nile is the source of most of the Nile's waters, and yes, Ethiopia is going to stop the flow in order to fill the reservoir. That will greatly reduce the flow. I very much doubt it will lead to war, apart from possible civil wars inside Sudan and Egypt. Egypt's ready, I doubt that Sudan is.

Sisi has problems all around him, you say.
Trump has problems all around him, I say.
It comes with the territory. That Sisi is at Sidi Barani and Eygptian forces are congregating from Saloum to the south on the Libyan border indicates that Erdogan may have finally stepped in it. It is time to end the Libyan impasse once and for all.

Egypt should rule Libya—they could use the Oil Money for their large population. Bring stability to North Africa and limit the growing power of Turkey.
