Coast Guard Base Alameda also referred to as Coast Guard Island is an artificial island in the Oakland Estuary between Oakland and Alameda, California. It is home to several major United States Coast Guard commands and cutters, including the Coast Guard Pacific Area.

It is one of the largest Coast Guard bases on the West Coast. From 1942 until 1982, the island was the site of the Coast Guard's recruiting training center (boot camp), enlisting and training hundreds of thousands of Coasties including many of the 214,239 who served in the Pacific and European Theaters of World War II.

Personnel Support includes the management of approximately 700 CG-owned Housing units, transportation of household goods, the Child Development Center (CDC), Morale, Recreation and Welfare (MWR), and personnel support services.

The Integrated Support Command provides office and work spaces for permanently based tenant commands and messing and berthing for their personnel. The Integrated Support Command is home to a variety of tenant commands including: Commander, Pacific Area; Commander, Maintenance & Logistics Command Pacific; Commander, Joint Interagency Task Force West; Marine Safety Office San Francisco Bay; Training Team One; Naval Engineering Support Unit Alameda; Electronics Support Unit Alameda; and homeport for 4 High Endurance Coast Guard Cutters: CGC SHERMAN, CGC MORGENTHAU, CGC MUNRO, and the CGC BOUTWELL.

Coast Guard Island is in the Oakland Estuary between Oakland and Alameda. The 68-acre island is situated in the historic Brooklyn Basin, now known as Embarcadero Cove. It is within the Alameda city limits, however, and only accessible via Campbell Boulevard in Oakland.

The Island supports a number of government facilities, including the Pacific Commander Station (U.S. Coast Guard District Eleven), an industrial service center, the San Francisco Marine Safety Office, a training center for reserve and enlisted coast guard personnel (class-rooms), living quarters, four 378-foot long high-endurance cutters, a medical and dental clinic, and public works facilities to service the island (i.e., sewage treatment, wastewater treatment)

I was in boot camp there in 1966. Fond memories: cussing, screaming, yelling, running, running seabags, running and then the chest thumping by Boatswains Mate 1st class Bragg while yelling sir yes sir. Biggest meanest S.O.B. on two wheels.

sigh! those were the days.

I had to pull up the radar after you said that. YIKES!! I hope that big batch of ugly calms down before it reaches you!

Sorry to hear you had hail damage. I now remember watching some storm chasers last month and they got caught in some monstrous hail. If you were hit with that, it looked big enough to punch holes clear through a roof. I hope that wasn’t the case with you.

It’s been a rough spring, hasn’t it? We didn’t get hail like y’all did but boy, have we gotten wind.

Hey radu!

Summer is indeed here too and it's the high 90's today and for awhile, just been hanging out with the A/C.

Got your FReepmail, sorry to hear Piper is almost gone. 😟

OUCH! Too hot. We’re a couple of degrees less here but the humidity has been thick. Rain in the area but never here, and that just upped our humidity. It was almost unbearable over the weekend.

Piper passed this afternoon. Finally at peace. Her kitty spirit is playing in the trees with our other kitties who are gone.

Howdy, Kathy.

Things a little slower today, allowing you time for a lunch break on the deck?

I was reading about the ships homeported there (description might be out of date) and had to add another entry to my books-to-read list:

Good plan.

Traditional “Office work” is highly overrated. Too much drama.

Howdy, luvie.

I’m relieved too. It’s been a long, rough, heart-wrenching weekend.

It has been. I’m sure her little spirit is relieved, too.

It’s RAINING...hard! No hail this time, but it sure sounds wonderful!

Ahh....Government Island. I’ve been on that installation several times and driven by it hundreds of times. Used to date a girl who bartended at a place just past the bridge. Looking forward to Freeper Canteen Roadtrip: NAS Alameda. I spent a lot of time there in my youth....

Yo luvie, I recently noticed that you changed your FReeper name, tired of being associated with ‘W’?

A big relief for her.

YAY for the rain - - - with no hail this time. That wasn’t on the radar, that I recall, when I looked before hopping in the shower. Glad you got it.

We’ve gotten an inch today and there’s a little more heading this way that we hope holds together long enough to reach us. The beans should really make a jump after the rain they’ve gotten today. It’s wild to see. When it’s dry for a while, they don’t grow. They sit and save their energy and when it rains ..... sproing!

Good evening/morning, Mayor, and thank you for today’s sustenance for body and mind.

Did you have a productive day today? Recovered from your fun times yesterday?
