U.S. senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) plan to introduce a new bill aimed at banning federal employees from using tech platforms that are under the influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
“Companies like Tencent and Huawei are espionage operations for the Chinese Communist Party, masquerading as telecom companies for the 21st century,” said Cruz in a press release.
Cruz added: “Prohibiting the use of these platforms and stopping taxpayers dollars from being used to capitalize Chinese espionage infrastructure are common sense measures to protect American national security.”
Congress is currently in recess until at least May 4, as part of social distancing measures to prevent the CCP virus, commonly known as the novel coronavirus, from spreading.
The bill, named “Countering Chinese Attempts at Snooping (C-CAS) Act of 2020,” would require the Secretary of State, in consultation with the Secretary of Defense, to put together a list of technology companies that they believe are “subject to influence or control” by the Chinese regime.
The Secretary of State would be required to submit the list annually to Congress.
The proposed bill would prohibit U.S. federal employees “to conduct official business over any social media, computer or smartphone application, or telecommunications technology, produced, operated, or hosted” by companies on the list.
The bill identified five Chinese tech companies—Huawei, Tencent, ZTE, Alibaba, and Baidu—saying that they would assist the CCP if called upon, to conduct espionage or gain “insight into the profiles, activity, or location of foreign users” via their products.
China’s national intelligence law, which went into effect in 2017, allows Beijing access to all data stored within its national borders—meaning data on Chinese servers could be accessed by the Chinese regime as well.

Sounds good to me. I always try to avoid buying Chinese stuff but the problem is that almost everything is made in China or one of its proxies. We just need to get manufacturing, development and everything we do in any field back to here US.

I just retired from the Department of Defense at the end of the year - ALL of the laptop computers we had (Defense Finance and Accounting Service) were Lenovo. We used to joke that we got Lenovo computers so the Chinese wouldn’t have to install after-market spyware.
Now can we stop the past 50 years of pretending that we are somehow even remotely friends with a mutual trust and instead realize we have enriched a deadly enemy?

Senator Tom Cotton was roundly ridiculed and branded a conspiracy theorist for saying that the Wuhan coronavirus may have come from a lab. There was an immediate false equivalence that he was accusing China of releasing an engineered bioweapon. That was never what he said, so we lived through weeks of China’s preferred “bat soup” story that insisted the virus came from a wet market.
HERE IS WHAT ELSE THEY DIDN’T DO/sarc
Every time an American looked at an item for where it was made in it came from China. Now China’s reliance making everything was being threatened by a change in leadership in America which was a major consumer of those products. When Americans hailed their leaders decision to make many of them in their country US. Their politburo worried.
Worse yet opponents to the Chinese regime in power had its citizens protesting its policies , as in Hong Kong, since that change in American leadership wave the American flag and present his name when doing so. All of which presented those in power the need to destroy that leader Donald Trump.
Would a runaway plague created by a nation which could threaten populations of an enemy cause them to react by demanding extreme restriction of movement by its population to prevent its spread ? Thus wind up fragmenting its economy and create defeat for that leader’s upcoming election.
The way this whole thing developed starting with the Italian fashion industry areas controlled by the Chinese commies hit by a runaway CCWV (Chinese Communist Wuhan Virus) breakout occurred in Wuhan the politburo closed off Wuhan but did not warn the Italian Socialist government or the Pope with whom the Chinese government had good relations with.
But certainly violated that understanding when the socialists should have been informed and allowed to deny those Chinese workers who replaced Italians in those factories taken over by the Chinese travel to and from China particularly for their New Year while this was occurring.
Where they seem to have done almost the same here with Smithfield Pork processing after the Chinese were hit with swine flu which destroyed their pork industry by their takeover of Smithfield Pork processing. When learning of the Wuhan shutdown Trump cut off China air travel with the exception of only allowing American citizens returning..But was immediately attacked by CNN and the alphabet media outlets as a racist Republican action.
Sure looks suspicious particularly when crews of US naval vessels somehow wind up being infected by it while visiting certain Asian ports before that showed up in Italy.
But to stop the return of manufacturing of products back to the US that went to China. China backers here who’s family members are making millions from China through their political connections will be hit hard are also claiming that Trump’s alleged stock ownership in a quinine pills maker claim its a controlling interest in a product to be totally ineffective and when used requires a severe restriction of movement when near a possible carrier known as a shutdown because of its alleged rapid transmission spread by our media.
It will take a LONG time to root out all the Lenovo, TP-Link and who knows what else out?

Looks like a wonderful opportunity to bring back the bulk of our manufacturing.... let’s call it infrastructure.... and let them waller in their own filth.

Require all electronics used by DoD to be US manufactured. For those systems that we use that are of foreign design to be produced in United States under license. Some exceptions can be made for solid allies. For example the ELTA 2080 radar for the Arrow system was jointly developed by Israel and the United States.
I think Walmart will have to shut down soon because I don’t think any of their products are USA made anymore. I guess apple phones are toast too.....

Got no sympathy for WalSmart as I remember the days of the Mom & Pop Stores which were unmercifully vanquished.
At least those stores had mostly Made In America products and small businesses still had some respect.
