President Trump said Wednesday that he’s instructed the U.S. Navy to “shoot down and destroy” any Iranian gunboats harassing American ships, in the wake of a tense encounter in the Persian Gulf.
“I have instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea,” Trump tweeted.
The encounter happened last week. Six U.S. Navy warships were conducting drills with US Army Apache attack helicopters in international waters off Iran last Wednesday when they were repeatedly harassed by 11 Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Navy vessels, the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet reported.
The Iranian ships repeatedly crossed in front and behind the U.S. vessels at extremely close range and high speeds, including multiple crossings of one ship, the Puller, with a 50-yard closest point of approach and within 10 yards of another ship, the Maui’s, bow, a 5th Fleet statement said. […]
The incident last week came one day after Iranian gunmen stormed a Hong Kong-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz before quickly leaving when they learned the vessel was from China. …

Probably has to do with what holdover Obama admirals ordered them to do.
They have been trained not to defend themselves. Recall that Obama fired an admiral the morning after he tried to protect Americans at Benghazi, for the encouragement of the others.
Invasions per se are not the problem, but what to do in the aftermath. Iraq is an example of what happens when globalist liberals run the show; and it would be a mistake to not think that the US liberals handed Iraq off to Iran (one clue was in Hillary’s praise of Iraqi Shi’ites).
Destroying the nuclear weapons program is also overdue.
Now that should be good training for the Navy.

When they do this, I hope they are alert to shore fired anti ship missiles. By alert, I mean having some stand off weapons ready to take out the coastal sites, en masse. Say cruise missiles armed with cluster munitions. If that does not work, whistle up a redo of the old ones with the W-80s punched up to 150kt.

Our Cyclone-class patrol ships, that are being chased, are actually working with the overhead AC-130s right now to simulate surface targets to refine target acquisition on small boats.
I have often wondered what protects those aerial gunships from stingers, or shoulder fired rockets? They seem like such easy targets, not that I’d want to be in a position close enough to find out.

They stay above the operational range for Stingers and other MANPADS of about 12,000 feet.

CWIS has no ability to target a surface target.
I hope they get lots of video when the Navy destroys them.
Hopefully the crews will be better than the ones that have wrecked two destroyers and the captain more composed than the one on the Roosevelt.
At least they have a few Marines around as backup when the Navy can’t get the job done.
Well, let’s sharpen up that thought a little.
Maybe the Iranians have determined they will continue withering away as long as Trump is President. Maybe the Mullahs have decided to get rid of Trump by losing a war.
The thought being that war trumps impeachment
