Krakatoa Volcano (Indonesia): Violent Eruption, Ash To 47,000 Ft Altitude (Breaking News)
Volcano Discovery ^ | 4-10-2020

Posted on 04/10/2020 4:12:15 PM PDT by blam

A large magmatic eruption is taking place at the volcano right now. Based on satellite imagery, VAAC Darwin spotted a high-level ash and SO2 plume reaching 47,000 ft (15 km) altitude moving WNW.

A strong thermal hot spot is detected as well. Both the webcam on Anak Krakatau Island and from the coast (in 40 km distance) show strong lava fountaining from the volcano.

This seems to be the strongest eruptive phase since the violent phreatomagmatic activity following the partial collapse of the volcano on 22 Dec 2018, which had triggered a deadly tsunami that killed hundreds of people on Java's west coast.

.... Isn’t this the anniversary of the original eruption ... aka .... the “Explosion Heard Around the World” in 1883?

El Chichon in 1982. The cooling was offset by the warming from a super El Nino. https://www.wired.com/2012/03/looking-back-at-the-1982-eruption-of-el-chichon-in-mexico/

that was Tambora in 1815. The ‘little ice age’ ended a few years before and then ‘BAM’.

(yes it is wikipedia, but, it’s good for this context. I was a librarian before retirement and it is a good source for general consumption)

Predicament? That means we will have a global winter which means no crops growing and the flu that is growing around is going to increase and kill us all faster. But since there be nothing to eat anyway we just as well be dead.

Thank you. After some other posts I recalled that and was reading about it. Tambora was 10 times more powerful than Krakatoa! Although I did see references to “the year without summer” for Krakatoa as well. (I think for both of them it was several years of noticeable lower temperatures).

The more recent Mt. Pinatubo eruption that closed down our military base in the Philippines also probably caused slightly lower temperatures the following summer (like 1 degree).
