Plain ignorance is the most charitable explanation for the misleading defense of communist Cuba offered by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on CBS News‘ “60 Minutes.” While saying he was opposed to Cuba’s “authoritarian nature,” Sanders insisted that “it’s unfair to simply say everything is bad. You know? When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing?”
Sanders correctly stated that education became universal in Castro’s Cuba, but he ignored the deeply Orwellian nature of the educational system. Literacy was not sought by the Cuban regime just for the sake of literacy. From the outset, the regime viewed education, as two experts on Cuba explained in The Atlantic, as the “key to the revolution taking hold and creating a literate population loyal to the government.”
Cuban children were taught in school that their highest loyalty is to the Communist Party. They were instructed to denounce their parents to authorities for counter-revolutionary tendencies. If parents, in the privacy of their own home, explained ideas to their children that conflicted with communist ideology, they could be jailed for three years under the Code for Children, Youth and Family.
The school system stifled private religious beliefs. Cuban children were taught that God does not exist and that religion was the “opium of the masses.” If a child mentioned God in a class, the child’s parents were called in for a stern lecture that they were “confusing” the child and given a warning.
Starting in elementary school, a student’s progress was recorded in a so-called “cumulative school file.” The file not only recorded academic progress but also measured the “revolutionary integration” of both the student and the student’s family, such as whether they participated in mass demonstrations.

The downside is that due to some type of economic calamity and the assistance of the mainstream media propaganda machine, Bernie could actually win. Remote chance, but possible.
I think we should do away with our Departments of Education. Since I began paying attention to it, I’ve watched our kids knowing less and less of American History, Art, Geography, but did learn a lot bout self. Vocation was taken out of public schools, and everyone was encouraged to attend COLLEGE. Today people with vocation abilities are hard to find.

I knew a girl in NYC. She was a cab driver. She moved to NY from Cuba after Castro was elected and took their family ranch, which was extensive. She told me, (she was in her 40s at the time) ‘honey, I never dressed myself until I was 18’. They were fabulously rich when under Batista, had a huge ranch with a mansion of a house and maids, chef, the works. When Castro came in he took it all. She left while they could and ended up driving a cab in NY to get by. Lived in a modest apt when I knew her in Queens. Hated Castro.

You know? When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? .............................. Yeah, got rid of his competition. Blew up Cienfuegos the real hero. Got rid of Batista and family, and made himself Presidente for life. The schools taught hate the USA, and the people of Cuba continue pray for a roast beef sandwich or a hamburger.

The people of Vermont must be drinking bad water. How could they keep returning a porn writing socialist to congress? Are they uninformed or stupid? I thought Vermont was the bastion of democracy instead of socialist campground.
Sanders is a traitor to the US, and instead of being a US Senator running for the presidency (a testimony to the openness and tolerance of the USA that he is privileged to live in), he should honestly have his citizenship revoked and he should be escorted out of the Senate. He’s an enemy of the state, clear and simple, and is inciting sedition and violence. He is not innocuous ‘Bernie’. He is Bernard Sanders - Communist.
Castro didn’t educate, he indoctrinated.
Why would he mention the bad side. He’s a commie. They lie.
