Fans of Rush Limbaugh, who announced Monday he has advanced lung cancer, may recall a gripping story the talk radio king once shared from his childhood that would inspire him to raise some $50 million to fight the very disease now stalking him.
Limbaugh, who held annual cure-a-thons for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on his widely heard radio program from 1990-2016, told listeners four years ago how he became driven to help fund cancer research. While a young boy, Limbaugh explained, he heard his father, also named Rush, talking in the familys Cape Girardeau, Mo., kitchen with a cousin named Rusby. The houseguest was a doctor and he was stricken with cancer, his voice reduced to a rasp.
And, theyre arguing over whether or not there will ever be a cure for it, Limbaugh recalled, and I remember Rusby telling my dad, Rush, its never gonna be cured. Dont you understand, Rush?

I am one who has benefitted from the research and advanced treatments for chronic lymphocytic lymphoma. I have always credited those cure-a-tones as being instrumental in that research.
I guarantee that Rush Limbaugh has raised more money for worthwhile charities than any 5 democrats. I bought one of his Betsy Ross flag t shirts and I never buy stuff like that. I did it for no other reason than to support his charity.
Very nice story.
Always thought it was shame that he couldn’t purchase an NFL team...
and now we have Jaz Z and Beyonce buying a team (or whatever they are doing) and sitting for the national anthem
Having watched 2 family members go through it l can tell you this they have made progress but they have not cracked it. There is a lot of lets try this and see how it goes. Everyone reacts differently and it still feels like they are stumbling around in the dark. Of course some cancers are worse than others and l believe someday when they really solve the puzzle the treatment methods used now will probably seem barbaric.
If he has to use novel therapies, such as “Right To Try,” I hope it’s effective!
I also have benefited from those telethons. I have chronic myeloid leukemia.
Um, welcome to the club. A club neither of us wanted to be in.
I was diagnosed with CLL 14 years ago. Seeing my Oncologist later this Month for my yearly checkup.
Best wishes for your continued remission.
We are fortunate to live in amazing times.
