A Note on Coronavirus: Don't Panic
American Thinker.com ^ | January 26, 2020 | Mike Konrad

I am not suggesting that we not remain alert, nor am I suggesting that we cast caution to the winds, but this present coronavirus will probably be nowhere near as deadly as many Chicken Littles are predicting.

Why?

Because, quite often, it is not the virus itself, but the secondary infections that are so deadly.

The majority of deaths during the influenza pandemic of 1918–1919 were not caused by the influenza virus acting alone, report researchers from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health. Instead, most victims succumbed to bacterial pneumonia following influenza virus infection. The pneumonia was caused when bacteria that normally inhabit the nose and throat invaded the lungs along a pathway created when the virus destroyed the cells that line the bronchial tubes and lungs.

Did you catch that? It was bacteria, piggybacking on top of viral damage, that caused the fatalities.

However, unlike 1918, today, medicine has an arsenal of antibiotics available to fight such bacteria — antibiotics that were not available in 1918. And yes, some bacteria have developed resistance, but not all. In plain terms, medicine has a better fighting chance.

In many cases, a course of antibiotics and acetaminophen (Tylenol) to control the fever might prove sufficient. However, there will be worse cases.

The 1918 flu also caused a cytokine storm, where the body's immune system over-reacted.

It wasn’t my child but the parents never really recovered..especially the mother. Marriage almost ended while dealing with fall out.

But life goes on. She never really knew how to answer the question of how many children do you have...no matter what she came up with it sounded wrong to her or it brought up awkward situations where people had to express sympathy etc.

No breathing treatments were offered. During that worst night, I was afraid to go to sleep, but the problem subsided and I didn’t go to the ER that night. Generally, when I went to the Urgent Care or ER my lungs were reasonably clear, so they didn’t have a lot of concern. The ER doc ordered a chest x-ray which came back clear. But I had zero energy — felt like I was constantly carrying a heavy load of bricks.

This season I’ve been using good doses of Airborne plus “First Defence,” a Vicks product made in Germany and sold in Europe. I first read about it on a FR thread earlier this year. I use both on the first indications of a sore throat and it twice seems to have worked. I’m on my third trial of the combo right now.

It seems the big problem in Asia is the penchant for fresh meat markets, the crammed animals, the proximity of live animals to humans, and the zoonotic vector of bats. Bats were the root cause of the first Ebola virus outbreak in Africa.

and WH officials .
This is a important World capital on shut down .
Why hasn't WHO ordered the termination of all mainland flights ?

Are we more concerned over Apple iphone production and Google services than this Chinese mess .
When Beijing. is shut off its time to act .

Interesting. Probably because you don’t have much well water — it’s naturally distilled from rain to reservoirs to your house. But it sure seems to me that there are ample opportunities for contamination from reservoir to treatment plant and then on the pipe network to your home.

I bought a Neti Pot a month ago and saline rinse packets, but haven’t tried it yet.

We have had the same excellent immediate care. I had a sprained ankle. No biggie, but a normal primary physician would have iced it, wrapped it, and prescribed pain meds and an anti inflammatory. Typical protocol. My concierge doc found a fantastic ankle doc who used advanced treatments and diagnosis. Healed in three weeks with no lasting effects and no medicines needed. I also had immediate relief from the sprain. That episode, alone, was worth the $2,000 annual fee.

We’re all gonna die in ten years. St. Greta says so.

What’s a little coronavirus? Doesn’t make a damned difference.

They say God works in mysterious ways, but nature is very predictable, with human nature soon to follow.

Almost overnight, SanFran politicians will suddenly realize their homeless pooping on the sidewalk nuisance is Actual Reality ... with Actual Consequences!

Drain the Swamp ... before what comes out of the swamp kills us all, women and children hardest hit.

Vote ‘em out in 2020!

Those vents are busy now. They aren’t sitting in a warehouse. Respiratory failure is nothing to make light of. I have seen people with overwhelming, acute respiratory failure who couldn’t be ventilated, even with a vent. Young people, too. Assuming a patient will survive because they got put on a vent is a mistake. People die of respiratory failure on vents all the time.

Sorry, I don't get it. Is that a way to kill the virus?

Body aches, Cough and Fever. The last time I had the Flu was 62 years ago. I am 78 years old.

Last time I had the flu was 28 days ago. I had a residual cough until a few days ago. You are right: aches in muscles and joints, fever, some cough, a little congestion (nothing like a cold or allergies). That was the first week. The second week was loss of apetite mainly because no food tasted right. I ate corn chips craving the salt. I knew it was salt, but it was bland and awful. I basically just stuffed down whatever food I could trying to avoid nausia.
