Matt Gaetz says he was kept off impeachment defense team over war powers vote

One of President Donald Trump’s strongest supporters on cable news and Capitol Hill was surprisingly excluded from his impeachment defense team — and he has suspicions as to why.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) was widely believed to have been a frontrunner to join a select group of House Republicans to defend the president through media outreach and providing consultation to his legal team, but he was snubbed.

In an interview with Politico, Gaetz said he wasn’t entirely sure why he was kept off the team, but he has been told by someone in the White House that Eric Ueland, the legislative affairs director, was “responsible for the brush back.”

“I don’t know why it would serve someone in the White House to manufacture a divide between the president and one of his best communicators during impeachment,” Gaetz told the outlet.

When reached by Politico, Ueland wouldn’t comment directly on the Florida Republican’s allegation. He did, however, mention Gaetz’s support for the House’s war powers resolution, which would limit the president’s ability to wage further military action against Iran without congressional approval.

Rep. Gaetz: Trump suspended Ukraine military aid over corruption concerns The resolution did not signify a shift in policy or position for Gaetz, who began courting fellow House Republicans to support the measure after Democrats added one of his amendments to it, but Trump loyalists dragged him for the move nonetheless.

“While the Trump administration was disappointed in Mr. Gaetz’s [Iran war powers] vote, the president’s successful policy to reduce Iranian terror and misbehavior proves the path laid out by the president is working,” Ueland said in a statement to Politico. “We look forward to working with Mr. Gaetz in the future.”

Gaetz responded, “He knows it’s House Democrats, not Iran, who are impeaching the president, right?”

so, matt tell us why the F... did you vote for that? I mean, in my books, you are now a joke...

He was trying to up his beltway “maverick” profile, made a miscalculation and got burned. His best bet now would be shutting up and not giving interviews to Fake News Politico.

What gets me is that the vote meant nothing... nothing.

Ok, I get it, he lives in an area with service men and families, but it was only some half baked proclamation.
Nothing binding on the president, and there already is a war powers act.

I have to tell you, I liked the guy, but I’m dumbfounded by it.

You guys love to lose. He’s in a military district. I laugh at your stupidity when you throw out a good house member for a democrat.

I laugh at you thinking Gaetz’s military district approved of him voting with Pelosi on anything.

Are you aware a military vet Democrat said Pelosi’s bill was partisan garbage and voted against it?

“Sadly, siding with the toxic Democrats on any issue now is damning.”

Yes, that is sad, because Republicans are not always right. There are some war-mongering Republicans and President Trump needs to stay on their good side through this impeachment BS.

But in private, I do not doubt for one minute that the President sympathized, and agreed that Matt Gaetz should vote his conscience.

President Trump ran on getting us out of these endless wars in the Middle East. There is nothing wrong with a man of good conscience holding him accountable to that promise, and I am sure the President expects nothing less.

Gaetz continues to be a strong advocate for the President and if the defense team snubbed him over the foreign policy disagreement, it’s their loss and the President’s.

I think he should be keeping his mouth shut if he truly wants to support Trump!

He is not on the team, that does not mean he should not be a team player now...Giving Politico comments like he did are not helpful IMHO.

NO ONE would want someone on his legal team who had recently gone against him on an important matter. It’s not just about trusting the advice, but about avoiding potential sources of leaks. It’s perfectly reasonable cautiousness.

Flashback: The Hill 04/09/16

“Conservative radio host Mark Levin says he will not vote for Donald Trump in the general election because of Trump’s connection to controversial strategist Roger Stone.

“I’m not voting for Donald Trump. Period. … These bully, dirty tricks, Nixonian tactics, they’re only going to backfire. So, count me as never Trump,” Levin said Friday.”

Mark Levin Show 8/12/16

The Trump surrogates got their man nominated, but what they need to do is help straighten him out and convince him to advance conservative principles and liberty.

Mark Levin Show 8/30/16

‘If only the #NeverTrumpers, if only Jonah Goldberg and Bill Kristol and Glenn Beck and this one and that one, if only they’d get behind Trump, then we’d be winning! Then we’d win big time! Oh yes!’ No we wouldn’t,” said Mr. Levin, Mediaite reported Tuesday. “As popular as many of those men and women are, they’re not going to sway anybody one way or another. This is a presidential election. People make up their own minds. […] You’re going to vote your conscience. That’s a statement of fact. […] Maybe Trump will win. Maybe Hillary will be stopped — but we nominated the wrong person.”

But that’s when Cruz was still running and people believed the lies that Trump was the same as Hillary Clinton. A couple days after Trump came down the escalator, I said I was changing from Cruz to Trump, people here told me, “Then you are a liberal!” The wisest people admit when they are wrong and Mark admitted he was wrong. Matt Gaetz? Still whining I guess.
