Trump Adds a Few Familiar Names to His Defense Team

The Trump White House announced a few new, yet familiar names that are joining the president's defense team as the Senate impeachment trial officially gets underway next week.

The president's expanded defense team now includes Kenneth Starr and Alan Dershowitz. Starr is the former independent counsel who led the Whitewater investigation into President Bill Clinton in the 1990s, which led to his impeachment. Dershowitz is a former Harvard University law professor who has been a part of a few high profile, successful defense teams such as the group that got O.J. Simpson acquitted n 1995.

He released the following statement following Friday's announcement.

STATEMENT REGARDING PROFESSOR DERSHOWITZ’S ROLE IN THE SENATE TRIAL - Professor Dershowitz will present oral arguments at the Senate trial to address the constitutional arguments against impeachment and removal. (1of 2)— Alan Dershowitz (@AlanDersh) January 17, 2020

(2 of 3) While Professor Dershowitz is non partisan when it comes to the constitution—he opposed the impeachment of President Bill Clinton and voted for Hillary Clinton— he believes the issues at stake go to the heart of our enduring Constitution.— Alan Dershowitz (@AlanDersh) January 17, 2020

(3of 3) He is participating in this impeachment trial to defend the integrity of the Constitution and to prevent the creation of a dangerous constitutional precedent.— Alan Dershowitz (@AlanDersh) January 17, 2020

Trump's defense team will also include former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi, Robert Ray, and Jane Raskin. White House Counsel Pat Cipollone and American Center for Law and Justice founder Jay Sekulow will serve as lead lawyers.

The Senate impeachment trial will begin next Tuesday, January 21 at 1 p.m.

“But he’s the guy that helped get OJ Simpson a not guilty plea for killing his wife.”

Dershowitz was not one of OJ’s attorneys. He did represent Claus Von Buelow, however.

“Only adding Mark Levin would have been more satisfying.”

I said the same thing on a different thread, and a couple people tore me a new one. It was because Levin initially was anti-Trump. (So were a lot of people who now are completely on board.) I’d rather see Levin taking up that spot than light-in-the-loafers Starr and the everlasting, wouldn’t-melt-butter, god-forsaken smirk on his face. Creepy guy who helped cover up Vince Foster’s murder.

Dershowitz is a good pick, Starr is an empty suit, Bondi is no help. Why not Trey Gowdy, Levin and Jim Jordan? Trump should have tough fighters to defend him.

I didn’t get any such nonsense in response. Agree or not, Levin articulated the reasons at the time why he did not support Trump. On yesterday’s show he said he’s now convinced no one else could have beaten Hillary. You’ll find no more full-throated supported than he in the radio today. So to hell with those who can’t give up a grudge. Call me crazy but shooting one of your own most valuable troops in the head doesn’t make any sense to me

I like Pam Bondi. She is an excellent attorney and not at all shy about being on TV to advocate for Republicans and conservative issues. She has a pleasant personality and other very attractive assets as well. Nature has favored Pam and obviously bypassed Speaker Pelosi. The viewing audience will be attracted to her intelligence and common sense and her ability to stand up for Pres Trump whatever lie or trash the commie democrats throw out to defame him.

I think Trump must have known her from before. This is just a way for her to score some cash for being on this team.

Yep - and Dershowitz opposing the Clinton impeachment and voting for Shrillary makes it hard for them to claim he’s part of the “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” - Trump is throwing their false memes of impartiality in their faces...

If you’re guilty, hire Dershowitz. Everyone knows that.

You saying President Trump is guilty?
None of them, or us, could have gone through the same witch-hunts he has w/o them finding a number of actual crimes - yet they came up empty - that makes Trump look like the literal choir boy.

He definitely did not withhold aid from Ukraine in order to manipulate them (while they were under invasion from Trump’s friend Putin) into announcing, but not actually conducting, an investigation into the leading Democratic presidential candidate. Anyone who could possibly suggest such a thing occurred would have to be insane.

“Dershowitz was one of OJ Simpson’s attorneys.”

Not really. He advised OJ’s attorneys on possible appellate issues, but he had nothing to do with OJ’s actual criminal defense.

The “If you’re guilty, hire Dershowitz. Everyone knows that.” seemed a bit odd.

From wikipedia:
The “Dream Team” refers to the team of trial lawyers that represented O.J. Simpson in his trial for the murder of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. The team included Robert Shapiro, Sara Caplan, Johnnie Cochran, Carl Douglas, Shawn Chapman, Gerald Uelmen, Robert Kardashian, Alan Dershowitz, F. Lee Bailey, Barry Scheck, Peter Neufeld, Robert Blasier and William Thompson.[1]

Nope. Dershowitz never performed any legal services for OJ’s defense of the charge of murdering his wife and her friend; all he did was advise OJ’s attorneys on possible appellate issues. He never participated in the trial; he never provided any legal work for OJ’s actual defense; as far as I recall he never even met with OJ. He was strictly an advisor to OJ’s “Dream Team,” but was not an actual member of the Dream Team.

I stand corrected: I just located a photo that shows Dershowitz and OJ talking together.
