Mark Sanford announces Trump primary challenge: GOP 'has lost our way'

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford announced Sunday that he is running for president as a Republican, becoming the latest to challenge President Trump in the GOP primaries.

Sanford said the Republican Party is facing an identity crisis, and he wants the GOP to take a look at itself and do some soul searching.

“I think we have to have a conversation about what it means to be a Republican,” Sanford told “Fox News Sunday,” claiming the party “has lost our way.”

Sanford specifically made reference to the debt, deficit and government spending. Other conservatives expressed concern about these issues when Trump helped Congress pass a spending bill that increases spending caps and suspends the debt ceiling, allowing for more government borrowing until July 31, 2021. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., blasted his colleagues at the time, saying it “marks the death of the Tea Party movement in America.”

Sanford also challenged Trump’s tactics when it comes to trade, saying that engaging the world when it comes to trade is “one of the hallmarks of the Republican Party.”

He also brought up political culture, which he said has been “damaged” by Trump. “We need to have a conversation about humility,” Sanford said, blasting Trump’s social media habits by claiming that a tweet “is not leadership.” …

And he lost his way. In a rather spectacular manner.

“The primaries have become the home of ding bats like this guy. Continuing an open conversation, I agree, is healthy, but the conversation is with stalking horses and ding bats not with those who might have to stick their neck out like Romney, Lee, or the Postman.”

You make a very good point, no disagreement here. My only argument is what we all witnessed in 2016 - Trump made mincemeat out of Low Energy Jeb and Little Marco. A good and powerful candidate can run these sissies over just like that. It took him no effort at all. What I don’t like is the possibility of closing off good arguments that would help us include perspectives that come from other candidates.

Is this sad sack still with his soul mate? Is he back with his wife? Maybe there’s a hole in his heart and he thinks running for president will fill that.

As an aside, I am really sick of that stupid phrase, “We need to have a conversation” about this or that. Is that the weak version of, “We need to DO something.”? It sounds like a limp wristed way of sounding tolerant.

Difficult to hold getting distracted by an Argentine female against him (no stones to cast in this hand), but his money comes from his grandfather’s invention of sansabelt pants. Adultery may be a sin, but Sansabelt pants are a crime.

Yep. I take it this guy is a Romney type Republican? There is a difference between lost our way and don’t want to go there.

“When a RINO wants to discuss the “direction” of the GOP, it invariably means to turn it further leftward. And RINOs have always mixed truth with lies.”

You’re right, obviously, in terms of RiNOs, but that shuts out any other perspective. Last I checked we’re still a democracy (lowercase D) and the voice and perspective of voters should’ve be run by a committee. Maybe you disagree.

Sorry, I meant to write “shouldn’t be run”, not “should’ve”. On phone.

No, he's a Justin Amash Republican. One of the handful for who spending, deficits, and government growth are everything. Well I have news for him; the train left that station and headed down another track long before Trump was elected.

Guy skips out on his wife without a word and then ditches the other woman without telling her. Sounds like the perfect "conservative" candidate.

Open conversation about the direction of the party is healthy. Look at the fight between the Sanders and Hillary supporters back in 2016 as an example.

Huh? Hillary LOST.

I was referring to the super delegates that kicked Sanders out of the primary even though he was reported to have won some states in the dem primaries. I’m not talking about the general election.

I don’t see a lot of difference between Never Trump Amash and Never Trump Romney. I don’t think Amash would be in the situation he is in if Romney were President instead of Trump.

Didn’t Horn Dog Sanford “lose his way” on the Appalachian Trail? All the way down to Argentina, IIRC. What a deluded dirtbag he must be to be lecturing anybody about anything after that.

The Luv Guv should choose Marianne Williamson the democrat
“American spiritual teacher” as his running mate. I think he needs a new mate.
