Friday on MSNBC’s “Deadline,” network host Al Sharpton said Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was refusing to comply with a congressional subpoena to hand over President Donald Trump’s tax returns as part of the president’s stonewalling strategy because he “knows what’s in the documents.” Sharpton said, “He knows what’s in the documents. It may be he’s saying I lose less fighting than if they get the documents, because he knows what we all don’t know and he knows what could hurt him.” He continued, “And that’s what I think the Democrats ought to be saying is, ‘you really can’t afford for us to get the document because maybe there’s some interesting reasons why only one bank would lend you money and why you had to make certain decisions.’ I think what they’re not doing is pinning the tail on the donkey here saying, and start suggesting ‘Why don’t you want to give us the documents, Mr. Trump? You want to talk about everything else, you tweet in the middle of the night, you call TV shows, why are you hiding this?’ And that is what I think would get under his skin.”

If there was anything illegal in his tax returns the IRS would have nailed him. It had already been weaponized against conservatives under Obama.

Any selective reading of ANYBODY’S tax returns would show that person in a highly unfavorable light. But the tax laws are what they are, set up in such a confusing way that anyone with malice intent can read just about anything into the way the taxes were prepared and payment made in any given year.

To be sure, Donald J. Trump has been engaged with highly seasoned and well-versed tax strategy and preparation specialists with advanced law degrees, and has scrupulously followed their advice in as many details as could be covered from known tax resolution precedent in the past. But even with all this, there may still be some land mine buried in the cumbersome and contradictory IRS code that a devious and clever individual that WANTED to entrap Trump could find the loophole, minute though it may be, and technically, he could be accused of “cheating” on taxes, a major headline, but meaningless in the whole scheme of things.

A New York Times report says that the now svelte Reverend and his for-profit businesses owe a chubby $4.5 million in state and federal taxes.

It isn’t only the taxman that is not being paid, according to reports.

Even worthy causes like hotels, landlords, and travel agencies are getting the cold shoulder from Mr. Sharpton or from his advocacy organization, the National Action Network.

Rev. Sharpton is the president of this civil rights organization, which has chapters and affiliates across America.

He is the author of books including ‘Al On America’ and the host of a nationally syndicated radio program, the Al Sharpton Show. He also has two for-profit business, Revals Communications and Raw Talent.

Some of his financial woes appear to stem from poor divisions between business and personal, a common tax problem among entrepreneurs.

Rev. Sharpton acknowledges that he’s not the best administrator. Presumably that applies to others in his organizations too.
