(CNN) The United States is cutting off aid to the Northern Triangle, otherwise known as the Central American countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, the State Department told CNN Saturday, one day after President Donald Trump said they had "set up" migrant caravans for entry into the United States.
"We were paying them tremendous amounts of money. And we're not paying them anymore. Because they haven't done a thing for us. They set up these caravans," Trump said Friday.
"At the Secretary's instruction, we are carrying out the President's direction and ending FY 2017 and FY 2018 foreign assistance programs for the Northern Triangle," a State Department spokesperson said. "We will be engaging Congress as part of this process."
On Wednesday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen signed what she called a "first of its kind" regional compact agreement with the Northern Triangle countries aimed at preventing irregular migration, combating criminal organizations and ultimately helping with US border security.
Trump threatened to cut off or substantially reduce aid to the Northern Triangle before saying in an October tweet the countries, "were not able to do the job of stopping people from leaving their country and coming illegally to the US."
But experts have said cutting off aid is likely to increase the number of migrants leaving the countries and heading for the United States.
According to the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, comprised of retired diplomats, military leaders and members of Congress, aid programs in the three countries are working to address the "root causes of violence" in order to "promote opportunity and security for their citizens."
Officials would not say exactly how much money would be affected by the directive with some of it likely already spent...

The problem with us giving money all over the world is most of it ends up in the pockets of the leaders of that country. Does little or nothing to help their people that need help.
NO MORE FOREIGN AID TO ANYONE until every America has a home and a job and our debt is paid in FULL.
Personally, I think President Trump needs to change the wording a little.
I recommend that his verbiage accompanying the written directives to be along the lines of:
“We are diverting the previously discussed foreign aid to the these governments to help pay the costs of temporarily housing and caring for people who have left their homelands and illegally entered the United States.
“This will accomplish two things. First, it will ensure that our aid actually reaches the people who need it the most. Second, it will provide some relief to the American taxpayers who have, unfortunately, paid for everything too long.
“This diversion of funds will continue until the flood of people fleeing these nations ceases.”
The last sentence could provide an incentive for the various dictatorships to start visibly and actively working to turn things off. Plus, when (not if) these dictators backtrack we can easily turn the money back off.

The fact that the rest of the world is largely composed of 3rd world shitholes should be a foreign affairs problem, not an internal domestic problem.
These people could be rocket scientist-saints and it still does not change the fact that they defy our will in order to be here. That’s a level of disrespect that no guest who wishes to remain a guest should ever show.

While you are bickering over dollars, turn off all social welfare money for all illegal immigrants, now. Magnet.
Hold corporate America responsible for the costs of this and mandate e verify for all businesses.
Want real change? End birthright citizenship and enforce the current laws while building a wall.
Finally, stop federal funding states with a single sanctuary city.
The wall is just a piece of it. Corporate tax dodgers are the biggest problem we have. Call each and every company out for not paying citizen taxes on each and every employee they have.
Of course, H1B visa employers need to be taxed much more than citizens.
