A Conservative Case for Puerto Rican Statehood
National Review ^ | March 26, 2019 | Kyle Sammin

Posted on 03/26/2019 7:36:55 AM PDT by C19fan

Democrats are in charge of the House of Representatives once again, and so they have placed a bill on the House floor that would admit the District of Columbia to the Union as a state. The political motivations are clear. The new state — for which they propose the unwieldy name “State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth” — would be reliably Democratic, adding two senators and one representative to the party’s totals.

Yeah, because the dems need two more reliable senate seats for all eternity.

NR is trying to be 100% wrong about everything every time.

I never understand, why Puerto Rico can’t just keep their existing status? People say their “permanent status” needs to be resolved, or words to that effect. They have been a possession of the US for about 100 years. Why the talk now to change that as if the current status is untenable?

Too many Puerto Ricans have shed blood and given their lives for the U.S.A. to just cut the island loose. I am however all for revoking Commonwealth status, making it a territory and installing a military governor.

Get rid of the corrupt politicians at all levels and things will improve, but there is little hope for that when the politicians and organized crime are interchangeable.

The Uniparty wants 2 more Democrat Senators.
It’s all part of the Bush Plan for North Mexico (aka USA)

PR is holding America hostage along with the pharmeceutical industry in a fake drug shortage because they want more taxpayer dollars. So not just no.

There IS NO CONSERVATIVE CASE for Puerto Rican statehood.

NONE
ZERO
ZIP
NADA

All it would do would ensure 2 more Democrat votes in the Senate IN PERPETUITY.

Anyone in the GOPe who thinks they can turn the place into a Red State must be smoking crack.

The Congress should require P.R. to get its debt under control and to enact a balanced budget amendment to its constitution as a condition of statehood. We did this in the 19th Century following some fiscal problems in certain of our states.

Regarding D.C., it should be part of Maryland (from whence the remaining part of the district came) for the purposes of electing Senators and (voting) members of the House of Representatives, and for casting electoral votes. It shouldn’t have its own electoral votes.

Ditto Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. They’re not viable as states. So, for the purpose of voting in the federal elections, they should be attached to states. For example, Guam with Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands with Florida.

We are the United States. All of our citizens should be able to vote in federal elections.

Rubbish. PR’s relationship with the US is a relic of progressive era imperialism. When we gave independence to the Philippines we should have done the same to PR. Given the renewed tide of progressive assault against the America which depends on the United States Government, adding a state with a 95 % foreign language and alien cultural history would be a lethal error.
