(Reuters) - General Motors Co confirmed on Friday it will invest $300 million in a suburban Detroit assembly plant, adding 400 jobs to build a new Chevrolet electric vehicle.
The largest U.S. automaker has come under heavy criticism from President Donald Trump in recent days over its decision to end production at its Lordstown, Ohio, assembly plant earlier this month.
GM officials said the announcement was planned well before Trump's series of angry GM tweets that started on Saturday. Trump called GM CEO Mary Barra on Sunday to urge her to reverse the decision to end production at the Ohio plant, which is in a crucial state for the 2020 presidential election. He again ripped the company in a speech in Ohio on Wednesday.

Trump is da man.
Electric vehicle?
Idiots. They’d do better to build a better muscle car.
Trump lockin up MI the best he can.
Expect widespread Detroit / Dearborn voter fraud.
Beyond stupid.
“Electric vehicle?”
Yeah, that was my first thought. I doubt the market is there yet. Not sure it will ever be.
Last I knew, SUVs were still what folks are buying.
The Chevy Volt was bad enough. And now they want to do it again???
I was going to ask, is anybody buying these.
Last I checked, all of my nephews under 30 still wanted powerful cars.
I’m 50 and I drive a Challenger.
Are there any powerful electrics that ONLY need a charge every 500 miles or so?
“Trump called GM CEO Mary Barra..”
She hates Trump and is going to outsource and sabotage domestic production as much as possible.
Who is going to buy these POS?
They’ll be extinct novelties in 7-10yrs, after having mega-billions wasted on them.
It could have been worse. They could have picked cold fusion power.
Idiots. Without the subsidies the few people who wanted these things are changing their minds. I think GM is convinced a Rat wins 20 and the EV will be forced down our throats.
Smoke ... will close in a year when the electric cars of the future fail to sell .... but the other factories in China will humm along.
What was wrong building it in Lordstown?
I am going to go out on a limb and guess that you never drove a Volt, right? I have registered 50 cars in my name in my life and my daily driver Volt is one of my favorites! I tried a Prius, but I like women, so that wouldn’t work. At a friends urging I tried a Vokt and after putting 70000 on it in 18 months my next car will be a 2019 Volt, very under rated car.
is anybody buying these.
In the suburban Chicago area, I see many Toyota Prius taxis.
And limo services that use Teslas.
I did find ONE Challenger taxi cab! If you are in a big hurry?

That’s AWESOME!!!!
When I drove livery, they were 20 year old cop cars with no AC/Heat :)
Maybe you got a radio.
And yes, I forgot. The taxi places buy a lot of these.
The new Rivian (Pickup and SUV) coming out late this ear or earl next, will have a 410 mile range on a charge.
New batteries are starting to show up that allow really quick charges to 80-90% after an hour or two.
It’s actually a great truck, and GM has invested in it, as well as Amazon.
The thought was that GM may wind up owning Rivian in the not too distant future. GM has probably obtained access to the technology. It could use in in some new vehicles.
The Rivian can drive through 36” deep water. This link to the site as some interesting info in it.
Not related, are some battery concepts that are showing some amazing promise if they pan out. One concept that has just had a major breakthrough (still needs a lot of work), could extend the drive time from 5 to 8 times today’s batteries.
Imagine this 400 mile truck going 2,000 to 3,200 miles on a charge, then reloading in 60 minutes to 80%.
In ten to fifteen years, I think we’re going to see some amazing things coming on the electric front.
BTW: The Rivian specs at 0-60 in three seconds. https://vimeo.com/303768361
