More bad news for diet soda lovers: Drinking two or more of any kind of artificially sweetened drinks a day is linked to an increased risk of clot-based strokes, heart attacks and early death in women over 50, according to a new study by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.
The risks were highest for women with no history of heart disease or diabetes and women who were obese or African-American.
Previous research has shown a link between diet beverages and stroke, dementia , Type 2 diabetes , obesity and metabolic syndrome, which can lead to heart disease and diabetes.
"This is another confirmatory study showing a relationship between artificially sweetened beverages and vascular risks. While we cannot show causation, this is a yellow flag to pay attention to these findings," said American Academy of Neurology President Dr. Ralph Sacco, who was not involved in the latest study.
"What is it about these diet drinks?" asked lead study author Yasmin Mossavar-Rahmani, an associate professor of clinical epidemiology and population health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. "Is it something about the sweeteners? Are they doing something to our gut health and metabolism? These are questions we need answered."

>Complete BS. Diet drinks are 99.9% water
>
>Everything has become politicized.
Very true.
Also, I hate how we are told fast food is bad, eating red meat is bad. What’s also a shame is how a multi-billion dollar a year business has been built around stupid health supplements and the idiotic MDs tell their patients to consume them.
Water strikes me as a diet drink. Should we avoid?
There may be more to this study than reported here. Loopy leftist cities, especially in California and NY, have decided to increase cash revenues by declaring “sugary soft drinks” the cause of all child obesity, and have managed to successfully tax the drinks. Now comes a study linking “non-sugary soft drinks” to health problems. Can a new ballot prop be far behind to radically tax diet drinks?
It’s fake news. No mention whatsoever of which type of artifical sweetener. Aspartame, Sucralose and Dextrose are 3 different animals. Agree Aspartame is bad stuff.
All those chemicals in H2O are bad. Chlorinated water is bad. Too much added Fluoride is bad. The Sodium in water softeners is bad. Water running through lead pipes is bad.
They tell us drinking water made from sewage is good.
Mother’s milk can contain cancer cells.
Aspartame gave me headaches. Splenda, which is a whole ‘nuther animal, doesn’t. The article never mentions which type of artificial sweetener so without that VERY IMPORTANT variable, it’s bunk.
Diet or not, soda pop is nasty business. There is nothing like cold, clean spring water to quench a thirst and make your body feel good. Also, good news for coffee drinkers. Apparently coffee is NOT diuretic and actually very good for you. Especially strong black coffee. I now add black coffee to my water totals each day.
Winner winner, chicken dinner
Thanks bitt. I'm just glad fettucini alfredo is still okay.
Unless combined with Vit C containing fruit juices, then no limit?
I try to drink 4-5 quarts of water a day. I either run or lift 5-6 days a week. Might have a soft drink once every couple of weeks.
Good water with the occasional cup of coffee, a beer or glass of wine, but then am type II diabetic and it’s either be a health fanatic or start losing bodyparts.
You should try:)
Was this person overweight? Drink too much? Sedentary? High blood pressure? Abuse drugs of any type (legal or illegal)? High stress job?
Yep, correlation is not causation.
I have my own bad experiences with aspartame. Its nasty stuff.
Right!
