100s of Southern Baptist leaders accused of sexual misconduct in bombshell investigation
Fox News ^ | Februar 10, 2019 | Anna Hopkins

Hundreds of leaders and volunteers within Southern Baptist churches across the nation have been accused of sexual misconduct against young churchgoers for decades - many of them quietly returning to church roles even after being convicted for sex crimes.

A bombshell investigation by the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News found that over the last 20 years, about 380 Southern Baptist church leaders and volunteers have faced credible accusations of sexual misconduct. Of those, roughly 220 were convicted of sex crimes or received plea deals, in cases involving more than 700 victims in all, the report found. Many accusers were young men and women, who allegedly experienced everything from exposure to pornography to rape and impregnation at the hands of church members.

The newspapers reported that the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) largely treated the accusations as isolated issues, and took on an "out of sight, out of mind" mentality, even amid growing pressures to create a registry so the accusations wouldn't disappear as alleged perpetrators moved from city to city. The Chronicle and Express-News created a database of convicted sexual abusers with documented connections to the SBC.

The investigation took over six months and involved the cross-examination of hundreds of allegations corroborated by court documents and prison records. The results were startling and reiterated how allegations of sexual misconduct aren't limited to just the Catholic church.

I haven’t gone to church in years and this is one of the reasons. I prefer to study at home on my own.

380 perverts, over 20 years. That’s 19 per years. This is a rate of .0004%. By contrast, 51 Americans a year die from lightning strikes.
But Southern Baptist churches are not known for attracting and protecting homos.

This is just more of the old “everyone else is awful too” thinking.

One is too many, but lets not pretend it is that same as the Roman Church problem. Even the Priest who founded the Servants of the Paraclete (their pervert priest rehab center) was fired in the late 60s. His crime was reporting up that pedophile homos cannot be reformed and MUST be returned to the laity. They fired him and sent them back to other churches.

I used attend this church that knew the history on this one dude, did a background check, verifying the history, gave him a break put him the youth ministry anyway (breaking their own rules) and got burned. When I heard about the misconduct, and read the newspaper I wondered why they would entrust someone with his criminal record (narcotics) into the youth ministry.

My wife had a background check done there to teach aerobics and after a long and studied determination the board finally okayed her request... this felon was handled with a different set of standards and the scenario played out.

I thought only Catholic priests are the ones committing these crimes!

No, not only catholic priests. The problem catholics will have to deal with is the way its dealt with when it occurs.

There are people drawn into ministry (catholic, protestant, independent, non-denom, whatever) for psychological reasons who have no business being there. When you find them you have to get them out. If that involves a call to the local police, you have to make the call.

And there are more Catholics that SB. To compare, we have to use percentages to be fair.

The Catholics are protected by the church, transferred to another location to escape investigation and prosecution. The Baptist’s turn their criminals in for prosecution. Do you see the difference? Hint: Catholic Church is molester enablers.

Your information is at least 30 years old.

Here we see with the SB that celibacy isn't the problem. Homosexuality is the problem.

My mid-size SBC church background checks everybody - but a lot of smaller churches probably do not.

I’m sure Satan sends his homos and pedos to infiltrate all churches, not just SBC and RC. They have to be carefully weeded out at the least suspicion.

Definitely. Besides just looking at raw numbers one should consider the types and severities of the cases. Maybe also consider systemic corruption and whether cases were covered up and by whom. Lots of things to consider.

I have a relative who used to work for the division of the state board of education that removed teaching certificates for sexual offenses. The vast majority of those that lose their teaching certificates go unprosecuted.

And we haven’t even touched on the sexual abuse that originates in families and in the schools...….far higher than any church.

Anybody who honestly read the John Jay Report knew that. It was really not about old men buggering seven year old boys. But to call it what it actually was would be admitting that homosexuality is an abomination. The media and those seeking to destroy the RCC would never admit that.

I have long argued if the OneWorlders/atheists destroyed the Catholic Church all other Christian denominations would be easier to take out.

No, even small churches do background checks in the twenty-first century.

380 leaders over 20 years is 19 / year. Just over 1.5 / month.

Out of a population of HOW MANY PRIESTS, DEACONS, ELDERS, YOUTH LEADERS, and COUNSELOR?

Where's that Iowahawk piece about the violence committed by reporters?

How many are Democrat and “liberal”? I mean that.

The Baptist church in the South has a long association with the Democrat Party, the party of racism and immorality.

I have been in ministry, and have had personal interactions with many laity and clergy from many denominations.

My experience with Baptists is that they tend to be traditional rather than conservative. The two are not the same! (Think Jimmy Carter!)

I left ministry in part because of such hypocracies (which I wearied of fighting) - and neither I nor most others are saying that sexual/erotic sins do not exist at all among married clergy.

I say that the temptations are EXACERBATED and COMPLICATED by the compulsory, extra-Biblical vow of celibacy, coupled with the added extensive homoerotic dimension.

I refuse to equate a male pastor seducing a post-pubescent girl with a male priest seducing a pre-pubescent boy. Both are sins, but the added perversion of the victim being a same-sex young child matters!

The problem in the Catholic church is worse.

Your argument is a straw man.

We're blessed.

We have been discipling our own members and their children for years and now, many of those kids are all grown up, married and serving in the church they grew up in.

I suppose the key to not being accused of sexual misconduct is to have a marriage to a healthy sex partner, both serving the Lord.

I OFTEN advise a young man to join the choir.

While up there, take a look .....

Those single girls are in the same place as you are, in the same book on the same page for the same reason ....

I still think that's as mature an approach to marriage as one could get.

A lot less numbers than the CC. I think Houston alone had just recently released a report that 10 times of that amount had been involved in sexual misconduct.
