Trump expected to address border-shutdown stalemate [natl emergency? or deal?]

The White House is making plans Friday for an afternoon announcement about the border and the government shutdown, sources said, as President Donald Trump faces increasing pressure to find a way out of the weeks-long standoff.

The President did not originally have any announcements on his schedule, and the timing of the event could change, the sources said.

White House officials have been exploring ways out of the government shutdown, which on Friday led to widespread delays at East Coast airports. The pressure increased when two competing proposals to end the deadlock failed in the Senate on Thursday.

The President has not ruled out declaring a national emergency, and on Thursday repeatedly insisted he had many "alternatives" to securing border wall funding that did not involve Congress.

Officials continue to say, however, that they prefer solving the dispute legislatively, and have remained in close negotiations with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Meanwhile, lawmakers on Capitol Hill have indicated that they are waiting to see what the President will accept as part of a short-term funding deal.

President Trump is expected to announce Friday he’ll back a move to reopen the government for a few weeks. He’s slated to make a statement on this development at the White House Friday afternoon, amid a tumultuous day with the federal government shutdown affecting staffing at airports. Earlier Friday, his former campaign adviser and associate Roger Stone appeared in federal court. Mr. Trump is expected to meet with mayors and pastors later in the day.

CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett reports that Mr. Trump is expected to back a continuing resolution (CR) — which would fund the government at current levels — and reopen the government for a few weeks. The border security debate will continue while the resolution is in place, but the move is designed to take the stress off the system and assure that federal workers get paid.

I suspect the only real purpose of the CR is to get these Federal workers paid for the last 4-5 weeks.

And when this CR expires? Will they have to go another month or two without salaries again?

Any of them with half a brain should be out looking for a new job right now anyway.

I suspect you're right, but hate to think that all those men and women of the Secret Service protecting Trump and Pence are spending their time on Indeed.com instead of watching out for danger.

Hopefully, yes.

This is the best time for anyone with a modicum of skills to get a new job. They should do it now while they can ... and these folks do not have to be replaced.

The national emergency declaration should be made. Congress is not going to give him wall money in any form. It is the only way to go.

Thanks for that link. Not that I trust CBS any moe than the bastids at CNN. But it does add probability that it might happen.

Which I hope to God it doesn’t.

But look - the Airports are slowing down. Might even shut down. And the media places the blame on no one but Trump. So that’s what the sheeple will believe. And so Trump has no Trump cards left to play. He lost face on the SOTU/Letter War between him and Pelosi and is now outta options.

“GOP Senators were complaining about the Shutdown, but if they had done their job two years ago, this would have already been done.

The should feel uncomfortable- they’re the ones that screwed this up. “

If the average conservative grunt did more than complain online and pose with their gun collections, maybe they would have?

We had how many people go to the “March for Life”? How many people marched to their senators and House reps on this?

My only guess since Exec Order is like his last resort Nuke option, he needs to have tried to work the process to exhaustion first. We are at that point now w/ air travel being greatly effected for the masses.

So once Exec order is given, then we will see if the Courts want to do the right thing. Anyone talk to John Roberts lately?

Obamacare and DACA are two clearly un-Constitutional things, but yet to pull the plug on those could cause hardship so Constitution is becoming a pretty paper hung on the wall to make it all look good

And once the Secret Service, air traffic control, and Border Patrol find that all their staff have left for greener pastures then what?

Those are essential functions, and there are thousands of Americans who would be happy to do those jobs.

Even TSA reported getting thousands of applications for open positions in North Carolina while the shutdown was going on and the TSA agents weren't getting paid.

Haha - I just heard Rush say the Wilbur Ross said yesterday that federal workers should take out loans. I guess it didn’t go over well, but it sure as heck makes sense to me. Maybe they’re all maxed out and can’t get any more money....terrible managers if that’s the case.

Apparently most Republicans want a Democratic President and want to put the costs of illegal immigration as debt on the backs of their children and grandchildren

CBS is reporting that Trump is expected to agree to a 2 or 3 week CR to reopen the government and border talks will continue.

so what happens if not border deal after 3 weeks ?

I guess our gutless politicians agree to ANOTHER 3 weeks.

Every red siren of disgust I have against these dirtbags is blaring loud and long right now.

I used to admire Harris Faulkner - but now she’s whining about the shutdown is a “humanitarian” crisis, being every bit as much of a drama queen as Shep.

So what’s stopping Trump from declaring a crisis, funding this elsewhere, opening the government immediately and demanding the SOTU take place?
I love the man - but it’s frustrating that he never seems to take the final step to put anything at rest (firing Mueller, firing Rosenstein, releasing the FISA documents, etc.).
