Another FReeper informed me privately that the paying-a-hooker-with-a-check story belongs to Bob Beckel, who in 2002 (at the age of 53) paid a hooker named Maryam Massihi (aged 21) with a personal check; doing so enabled Ms. Massihi and her friends to attempt to extort $50K from him.

I confused "Barnacle" and "Beckel" because both are names start with "B" and end with an "L" sound, and both belong to left-wing commentators with bombastic attitudes.
